Cathedral's tennis team that qualified 3 doubles teams to State in the Class 1A division, dropped all games at Bridges Tennis Complex in Jackson, MS on Tuesday. Great run though and congratulations on a great year!

The MPSA Class 1A South State Tournament is going on at Duncan Park again today, qualifying for extended play today are: Mixed Doubles team of Whitney Bradford & Douglas Miller of Huntington. #2 boys  doubles Rob Greer & Everette Paradise of Trinity. #2 girls doubles Jessica Marchbanks & Mary Ann Lensing of Trinity. #1 girls doubles Sarah Ashmore & Katie Cole of Huntington. #1 boys Sam Kirby of Trinity.

The Gals-N-Pals Series week 1 winners were Larry Siler & Becky Siler with a 2 day total of 68-71, 139.

Good Luck to the Vidalia Vikings as they host Jonesboro-Hodge tomorrow in the first round of the playoffs.

I went out to Duncan Park yesterday and caught some action from the MPSA South State Class 1A Tennis Tournament, play resumes today with the cream rising to the top in the final showdowns. If you get a chance, stop by there as they will be playing most of the day. I believe they start at 9am this morning with the championship games starting at 1pm.

Well, I believe most all the youth baseball & softball summer league teams have began play in both MS & LA, get out and watch these youngsters, you'll be surprised how much fun it is to watch!

Walt Ketchings, Trinity: Doubled twice and homered in a 17-10 loss to Riverdale.

Cody White, Centreville: Pitched a 5-inning perfect game and homered in an 11-0 win over Columbia Academy.

Janice Davis, Natchez: Swept the 100 (11.88), 200 (24.86) and 400 (57.16) at the Region 3-5A meet.

Jordan Farmer, Cathedral: Led his team to the Division 4-1A title as medalist with a 69 at Brookhaven C.C.

I went out and caught some of the ACCS/Parklane softball game yesterday but, I wasn't there long enough to get the final score, also I got some footage of the ACCS Spring Training Football practice. I'll have the footage for next weeks show.

Well, I ended up at the Cathedral/Mize final game of the series, and I thought Cathedral had this one wrapped up! But a 7th inning rally by Mize put them up from a 8-5 deficit to a 9-8 lead. Errors by Cathedral and timely hits by Mize was the undoing for the Green Wave. As I left the game last night, I still couldn't believe it. What a year though, as this team battled and should have been playing in the next round! Congratulations on a great year to all the coaches and players.

ACCS Head Master John Gray competed in the McDonald's Big Bass Splash at Lake Sam Rayburn in Jasper, TX over the weekend, there were app. 3,000 fisherman there as this tournament is to see, "Who can catch the biggest fish every hour" Gray led one of the hours for 45 minutes before getting edged out and collected $700.00 for his effort. This tournament lasted 3 days and fish were weighed every hour for 8 hours a day. Top prize was $58,000, 2nd was $14,000, 3rd was $6,000 and 4th & 5th places won $2000.00. Gray caught his fish during the 11am to noon time slot, which was a double pay time.

Gals-N-Pals Tournament at Beau Pre' C.C. - Week #1 - First Round

Kenny Jackson, Bill Salters, Jeremy Loy and Kenny Carlton won the VFW Scramble at Duncan Park this past weekend, Congratulations!

Jonathan Halley qualified for the National Junior College Golf Tournament in Chautauqua, NY, he tied for first place at the State Tournament on 4/23 & 4/24 in Biloxi, MS. He finished 2nd after two play-off holes. He will go to NY the first week of June.

My News

Well, I didn't go to see Hinds C.C. play Meridian C.C. on Friday, the Hinds coach didn't cover the field so, it was too bad of shape to play and the games will not be made up. Meridian starts the State Tournament on Thursday and will play as the host. Christopher called me last night and said that earlier in the year, the coach told him that he expected him to be the number one pitcher by the time the playoffs started and he gave him the honor last night as he will be starting Game 1 on Thursday against MS. Delta C.C.

I ended up at the Cathedral/Mize game on Friday night and after a 4 run first inning by Mize, I now knew why they had only lost 2 games! But that didn't stop the Green Wave as they whittled back and eventually took the lead for good and came away with the victory. I had plans on listening to the game on Saturday when all of a sudden my daughter comes home with a sprained ankle, so we went to the hospital around 5:15pm to admit her and if you haven't been to the emergency room lately, consider yourself very lucky! as we didn't get out until 9:30pm! But that didn't stop me from heading to the car every once in awhile to check out the score, I mean, what kind of sports reporter would I bee if I didn't? Cathedral dropped a hard loss in this game leaving way to many runners stranded. Game 3 is tonight at 7pm and I'll be there with bells on! I believe Cathedral will take this one easily and will get geared up for South State!

This weeks Sports Buzz is a good'un! The playoffs and meets are getting going or just fixing to get underway and we have a host of teams that will be representing the Miss-Lou, we had alot to discuss and it was interesting, so get out there and support one of our hometown teams!

My News

I went out yesterday and caught the Cathedral baseball practice as they were hitting in the batting cage out at Chester Willis field. After they finished, they put the tarp back on the field to have it ready for today's 2nd round of the playoffs against Mize. Good Luck guys!

Vidalia finishes the regular season going 24-0! An impressive mark for ANY team. Congratulations!

I know that Jackson got bombarded by rain yesterday and last night, I'm not sure what it's going to do to the Hinds C.C. baseball field, surely they had the tarp on it but, I'll post on the Bulletin Board whether the game between them and Meridian C.C. is still on or postponed.

Great article in the Clarion Ledger about Natchez High hurdler Kendrick Gibbons, he currently has the best reported time in the State this year!

Centreville Academy Baseball

After going on a 12 game win streak, the Tigers go 3-6. Amongst those 6 losses, are two tough one run losses to Silliman, the probable champ of District 4-AA, by scores of 6-5 and 2-1. And two more tough one run losses to Brookhaven, their main competition for 2nd place, by scores of 1-0 and 7-6. Their district record though, is 12-4. And if they can take both ends of a doubleheader against Columbia at home on Friday, April 25, they will take 2nd place in District 4-AA.

The main reason for my writing though is the game last nite, Tues April 22 at Columbia. The Tigers won 11-0, but Cody White pitched a perfect no-hit ball game. Through 5 innings not one Columbia Cougar reaches base. A couple of running catches in centerfield by N. Mathis and some well played line drives by 2nd baseman C. Cooper and 3rd baseman S. Sinclair preserved the perfect game. The Tigers also hit 3 homeruns by White, Kimery and Perkins. White recorded 6 strike outs. White only threw 45 pitches, 29 of them strikes.

I rode by Chester Willis field yesterday and the Cathedral multitudes were out there preparing the field, mostly for the worst! As rain is predicted for today and tonight. Here's hoping that maybe it won't come in here until after all the ballgames.

Christopher will be pitching the first game as Meridian C.C. travels to Hinds C.C. on Friday for a conference doubleheader. Game time is scheduled for 4pm. This will be the closest game he will pitch in this year, so if you've been wanting to see him play, here's your chance and he'd love to have as many friends there as possible.

Cathedral Golf Team won the Division Tournament at Brookhaven C.C. yesterday. Jordan Farmer was the medalist shooting a 69, Mark Carter was 2nd at 70, Tyler Crisp was 3rd with a 77 and Jake Kaiser shot a 78 to tie for 4th. They qualified for the South State Tournament at Vicksburg C.C. on May 7th & 8th.

Great turnout for the Natchez Campus of Co-Lin C.C. Golf Scramble yesterday out at Beau Pre' C.C., they had a full field of golfer helping to support the schools scholarship fund. Ronnie Nettles, the dean of the Natchez Campus and I rode around while got some footage of the event, everybody looked like they were having a great time. I didn't get to find out who won but, they were all winners for helping this cause which Ronnie says is a major fund raiser for the school.

I watched some of the Trinity/Riverdale baseball game yesterday evening and it was a slugfest! and Riverdale just out slugged them in game #1. Here's hoping that Trinity will be the most aggressive team in the next two games.

I traveled over to the Vidalia/Jonesboro-Hodge softball game yesterday evening and caught Miranda Doughty in rare form yet again as she threw a 1 hitter. The Lady Vikings will play this Saturday at Farmerville.

For the finale of my evening, I watched the Vidalia/Rayville baseball game, Barry Bowden on a long week off from the mound, looked like he had just thrown on 4 days rest as he retired 17 Rayville batters. The bats got started a little slow for the Vikings but they added 4 more runs to the 5 they already had in the 6th inning. Vidalia will play Crowville on Thursday at 3:15pm.

I'm glad I got all the footage I did yesterday as the forecast is calling for rain on Thursday and alot of teams are also playing out of town!

Don't forget that the Sports Buzz comes on this evening at 5:30pm on Channel 4! Good show this week with plenty of action from around the area and even a few heated discussions between Jerry & myself!

Player of the Week - Will Arnold, Centreville Academy: Arnold, a senior, had the best reported shot put in Mississippi with a throw of 56 feet in the Division 4-AA track meet at Centreville. He won the shot put with a throw of 53-11 1/2 in the Academy Class AAA meet last year as a junior. The 6-foot-5, 325 lb. offensive lineman is a two-time The Clarion Ledger All-State first team pick and signed with LSU in football.

Glenn Williams, Adams Christian: Tied a State record with 4 homeruns in a 17-11 loss to Jackson Prep.

Karlecio Richardson, Natchez High: Ran a best reported 300 hurdles in 39.60 at the Division 6-5A meet.

Janice Davis, Natchez High: Won the 100 (11.98), 200 (24.97) and 400 (56.99) at Division 6-5A meet.

Trinity Episcopal puts 7 boys at the South State Track Meet. They had first places in the 400m relay made up of Chase Brown, Gregory Ketchings, Dudley Guice and Ryan Rachal at 46.6, the 800m relay team of Ketchings, Guice, Rachal & Nason Stephens at 1:33.3. Brown, Stephens, Guice & Rachal won the 1,600. Brown won the 300 hurdles at 42.2. Stephens won the 400 in 51.5, Guice won the 200 in 22.9 and the 110 hurdles in 16.5.

Don't get me wrong, Will Arnold has set new records in the shot but, they could have saved him for another week because, Glenn Williams 4 homers SHOULD have made him the Statewide Player of the Week. But then again, that's my opinion, and we all have them!

I plan on making the Trinity/Riverdale baseball game first today and then I'll just see what I can get after that, so if you see a white blur around town today...get out of the way!!!!

Caroline Hungerford (TE) & Tiffany Collier (AC) are a part of the Worldwide Spirit Assn. a cheerleading competition team based out of Baton Rouge, LA.

Vidalia's Jarrett Hoffpauir is heating it up again as he went 2 for 4 with a double and a home run as USM beat Memphis 8-4 on Sunday to complete the series sweep.

I watched another ugly sudden death playoff yesterday at the Heritage Golf  tournament. Davis Love defeated Woody Austin but only because Austin choked...twice! I guess the thought of owning 2 titles scared Austin as he gave it to Love!

Cathedral will enter their 2nd round of playoffs this week and Trinity will begin their 1st round...Good Luck guys!

Cathedral's Claire Kenda & JaMel Jackson both placed 1st to qualify for the South State meet and qualify 17 total.

Natchez High girls placed 1st at the division meet and the boys placed 2nd. Janice Davis won the 100, 200 & 400m dashes. Kendrick Gibbons won the 110m hurdles.

Huntington girls won the the district 7-1A title. Lauren Wagoner won the shot put, Emily Hazlip won the discus & the 300 hurdles and Jessi Moak won the 3,200.

My News

What a night! I watched most of the ACCS/Jackson Prep 1st game and left with the score tied at 8, I saw Glenn Williams hit 3 homers! I went over to watch the Cathedral/St. Joe game and got all the footage I needed rather quickly. As I was headed back over to AC, I called and got an update, Glenn Williams had hit his 4th homer of the night and the score was tied 11 each. Prep was batting when I got there and they put up 6 runs in the top of the 7th to go up 17-11, AC could only manage 1 run in the bottom half. Glenn Williams had one more at bat but, even with the score kinda lop-sided, they didn't intentionally walk him but, they didn't throw anything that he could put a bat on and he went to 1st base on 4 straight balls. ACCS had 7 home runs in the game!

In the second game, Prep again used a strong top of the 7th inning to go ahead by 2 runs after trailing by 2. AC couldn't rally and dropped 2 games to Prep on the night. There are alot of scenarios for the Rebels to make the playoffs now.

As I arrived at the Cathedral game, you would have thought the coach was throwing batting practice as the Green Wave were lighting the St. Joe pitcher up! Chris Norris was on the mound for Cathedral and he looked to have a little more "pop" in his fastball last night, his arm must be feeling a little better. Cathedral will play the winner of the Mize/Lake series.

I'll be heading out this morning to Meridian as Christopher will pitch against East Mississippi C.C. today, probably the second game, and I hope so because we're stopping in Prentiss to eat at the Country Fisherman and could be a little late for the first game that starts at 1pm. Christopher will get to come home after the game for Easter, but he'll have to make his way back on Sunday as they have school. He should get to pitch next against Hinds C.C. in Jackson next Friday.

Trinity will play the loser of the ASC/Pine Hills baseball game tomorrow at Liberty, MS. Game time is 2pm.

Although we already knew, Monique Jones from Ferriday High officially signed with Baylor to play basketball.

I listened to the Cathedral/St. Joe game yesterday evening as the Green Wave tipped the scales in their favor in the top of the 8th inning by breaking the tie and going up by 6 runs, what an inning! Good luck today guys!

I plan on catching the first game today of the doubleheader between ACCS and Jackson Prep and then skipping over to see the Cathedral/St. Joe game. Should be a good day of baseball.

Jarrett Hoffpauir had 3 hits and 3 RBI's as USM beat New Orleans 11-3.

I watched some of the first game of the doubleheader between Vidalia and Block in fast pitch softball yesterday. As I watched Miranda Doughty pitch, I thought to myself, "She's throwing that thing pretty hard!" I asked coach Gary Paul Parnham how fast she threw and he said that she was probably in the upper 50's and that if anybody threw in the low 60's, they would be hard to hit. I guess it's like baseball, when a kid throws in the low 90's, he not hit too much. But anyway, being that I own a radar gun, I retrieved it and went and stood behind homeplate, Miranda was consistently in the mid 50's and topped out at 57 mph. So you're thinking, "that's not very fast!" Well here's the kicker, she's throwing that from a distance of 40 feet. I can't calculate reaction time, but I guessing that it's about the same as a baseball pitcher throwing in the upper 80's. It's a guess but, I bet I'm close!

I went over and watched the ACCS Lady Rebels take on Brookhaven Academy, AC was without 2 star players in April Boyd (sick) and Meghan Marchbanks (college day) and at this level, you need all your regular people at their positions as AC had to shuffle around people to make a lineup. I'm not making any excuses for them, I've just been in the situation myself before when I used to coach and believe me, it DOES make a difference!

I was rummaging through the mail at the house yesterday evening and I found a flyer to Mississippi State's Baseball Camp, I have the flyer and anyone wanting a copy can either call me or the number I'll have listed under the Ramblings Section. There's still plenty of time before the first camp starts and I'm sure you can give them a call to receive a flyer for yourself.

The wife and I traveled to Liberty, MS yesterday to catch the first round of the MPSA District 7-1A Baseball Tournament. The first game was between Trinity and ASC, Trinity kept the game close for awhile but the hot bats of the host Rebels heated up mid-way through the contest and ran away from the Saints. In the second game, Huntington faced Pine Hills Academy and a rough first inning was too much for the Hounds to overcome as Pine Hills tacked on 8 runs in the first. It was all Pine Hills as they continued to hit the ball throughout most of the ballgame, Huntington was caught on an off night and that happens in the game of baseball. Tonight, Huntington will face Trinity and ASC will play Pine Hills.

Alot is going on around town today, so I hope to get some softball and tennis action for the show next week.

In recent weeks, Natchez High has put 4 basketball players to the next level, Karmethia Mazique & Gloria Lewis to Meridian C.C. and Crystal Brown & Derrick Martin to Co-Lin C.C., Congratulations!

Cathedral will travel to St. Joe (Greenville) on Wednesday to play at 6:00. Thursday Cathedral will play at home against St. Joe, also at 6:00. If the series goes 3 games, Cathedral will go back to Greenville on Saturday.
Cathedral played St. Joe last Saturday, and won 12-0, but they expect to see a much better team this Wednesday.
This series is the 1st round of the MHSAA playoffs.

My News

I played hooky on Friday and went to the M&D 500 4-wheeler races a day earlier than I had planned. We had a great time and saw some awesome machines bog their way through some tough holes. I'll have some footage of the competition on the Sports Buzz this week.

I watched the Masters yesterday as Mike Weir took home the Green Jacket over Len Mattiace in sudden death, they both looked horrible putting on the last green, I guess the thought of winning their first major was too much for them to handle.

I'll be in & out of the office today as I have a few new commercials to shoot for this weeks Sports Buzz, but I'll check into then Board every once in a while to defend my honor.

Congratulations to Natchez High's Karmethia Mazique as she signed to play basketball at Meridian C.C. next year.

I saw where Chad Vaught got time on the hill for LSU yesterday against Northwestern as LSU won 6-4. He didn't get the win but, any time is good time and the box score looks like he did a good job for the Tigers.

I watched the ACCS/Lamar game yesterday and figured ACCS would put this one away early but, Lamar put up 6 runs in the 3rd inn. to lead 6-2. ACCS came back and was winning 10-6 going into the 7th inn. when Lamar caught fire and put up 5 runs to go ahead for good. AC had its chance in the 7th before the bats folded. Glenn Williams pitched a good ballgame, he just had 2 innings where they tagged him and along with some critical errors, Lamar took advantage of them. AC will travel to Lamar on Friday for a varsity doubleheader.

I went out and watched Cathedral play Bogue Chitto yesterday and I told coach Craig Beesley that I needed to get home early tonight and would it be a problem if he could get his guys to give me all the footage I needed in the first inning. I told him that I had asked coach Hoffpauir the same thing earlier in the season and he batted around in the first inning for me. He just smiled and didn't really know what to say but, the Green Wave batted around in the first inning and put up 11 runs. As I packed up my camera and was headed off the field, he looked at me and just smiled, I said, Thank you and never stopped walking! Chris Norris pitched last night and his curve ball is still wicked! he just doesn't quite have his velocity back yet, but that will come as he gets his arm back in shape. Cathedral is looking good as of late and they'll be fun to watch as playoff time nears.

I've got some commercials to shoot this evening but, I'll be at the ACCS/Lamar baseball game afterwards.

In case anyone forgot, the Masters starts tomorrow, and if you don't know what the Masters is, there's no hope for you! The big question is, can Tiger be the first ever to make it 3 in a row? The next question is, will Martha be in attendance?

Well, everything got rained out yesterday, for the most part anyway. Some teams will try to make up and others already have games scheduled, so let's just hope we get some sunshine in here today to help dry things out!

I didn't even get to the Bulletin Board yesterday as I was putting the Sports Buzz show together and was busy after being gone since Friday, I've still got some catching up to do today but, it won't be as bad as yesterday!

With game times working out the way they are today, I should be able to get ACCS baseball, ACCS softball and Cathedral baseball today. I had big plans for yesterday, I could have gotten 5 different games the way the times were working but, so much for yesterday!

Sorry I'm late getting the news out this morning, I got some MUCH needed rest this morning, Talladega was a blast!!!! I didn't have a ticket so I was looking for a ticket as we walked up to the stands and the first person I saw had a single ticket in the new tower right on the finish line straightaway, it was so high up that I could see the whole track. My brother came over to tell me that there were some empty seats by him and when he saw my view and the empty seats around me, he stayed there and we watched the whole race from there. I'm not one to sit down in front of the TV and watch NASCAR but, I promise you if you've never been to see a race LIVE, it's totally different. Also, it is a sport, unlike what some people say, there is alot of ability to driving one of those cars and if you watch a race, you'll know what I mean.  There was a 20 something car crash in the 4th lap of the race in turn one, after that crash, most of the cars looked like they had been in a smashup derby contest, later on there was a mishap in front of me that sent some cars into pit row to avoid being involved, the last crash was right at the end and caused driver Jimmy Johnson, (who stayed near the top all day) to fall out of contention. There were 40 something lead changes during the day which kept it very exciting. All in all, it was fantastic and I can't wait to see another one!

I haven't even had time to read the papers and see what all took place with the Miss-Lou teams while I was gone, I'll probably catch alot of games today if the weather permits.

Boy, talk about a long day! The wife & I left Natchez around 10:00am yesterday and we took Hwy. 84 so we could stop off in Prentiss, MS and eat at the Country Fisherman, it's the best buffet I've ever eaten at....period! We got to Scooba around 3:30pm for the 4pm start of the first game (no sense going that far for one game) MCC won the first game 12-3. Christopher caught me before the game and said, "Don't even pull the gun out, I just pitched on Saturday and I won't be throwing hard!" Well, I snuck underneath the bleachers so he couldn't see me and I gunned him anyways. He was throwing as hard as he always does, 89 to 91 mph. I noticed that he had a funny look on his face after he started pitching and I went over to the dugout to see what was the matter, I heard him tell some of his teammates that there were 3 batters up there and that he was dizzy, I noticed also that he was sweating really bad. They put some ice on his neck and he took some Aleve and went back on the hill the next inning. He pitched 5 innings and gave up 5 hits while striking out 8 batters, he was still hitting 91 mph in the 5th. When he finished pitching, he told me that he felt a little better but that the first 2 innings he was feeling pretty bad. Also while I was there, a scout for the Toronto Blue Jays was in attendance, he talked really good about Christopher and gave him a form to fill out and mail back to him. Tidbit: Toronto does not draft any kids out of High School, it's just a team policy, I found that interesting!

The Meridian C.C. girls basketball coach (who is also the Athletic Director) was at the game, I had met him at a Natchez High basketball game earlier this year. He told me that Karmethia Mazique and Gloria Lewis were coming to MCC next year to play basketball for him.

I'll probably catch the ACCS Tennis match today and then the ACCS/Copiah baseball games.

I'm not sure what time I'm leaving in the morning, I was told that we're leaving early. So I don't know yet if I will have time to post the main page in the morning yet. If you don't already know, I'm headed to my first NASCAR race at Talladega, we're taking my brothers RV and staying in the campground. I'll usually watch the races on TV if there are only a few laps left but, everybody tells me it's not the same as being there LIVE! I'll find out what all this is about.

Centreville moves their district record to 7-0 with a victory over a tenacious Bowling Green team on a cool dry evening in Franklinton, LA.
Rayborn of Bowling Green strikes out 9 Tigers, but Centreville scores in every inning except the first and last to take the victory. Bowling Green manages one run in the first inning, as C White shuts them out the rest of the way. He was backed up by some very  nice defensive plays by the Tigers. Rayborn keeps the Tigers power game in check by allowing only 2 doubles, by White and Landers and 1 homerun by Havard. As has been said here before, the competition gets a little tougher now. It is time to see what these Tigers are capable of.

I watched the Trinity/Pine Hills baseball game yesterday evening and Pine Hills did a good job of hitting the baseball and taking advantage of Trinity errors. This may be one of the better teams that Pine Hills has had in quite a few years. Trinity has alot of young guys that just need more experience and learn to be more aggressive at the plate.

I'll be headed out sometime this morning for Scooba, MS as Meridian C.C. takes on East Mississippi C.C., Christopher will pitch the second game sometime around 6:30pm, we'll be getting in pretty late tonight so, don't be surprised if this page isn't updated as early as usual!

I traveled over to Duncan Park yesterday and saw the Natchez High/Warren Central Tennis matches, I also caught Cathedral practicing their tennis drills and I caught the Natchez High Golf team getting in a round. I'll have that footage next week on the Sports Buzz. After everything changed on me yesterday, I ended up at Huntington as they hosted Porter's Chapel. PC has 3 pitchers that throw in the 80's, their #3 guy threw against Huntington's Bronson Rhodes who looked good through the 3 innings I was there as it was a 3-1 ballgame when I left. Bronson doesn't throw it by many batters but, he sure keeps them off balance with his off speed stuff. PC should go far in post season play!

As I explained yesterday about Christopher giving me exact pitching days, I found out last night that he will be pitching tomorrow against East Mississippi C.C. in the second game at Scooba, MS. So we'll be heading out fairly early in the morning.

I hope to get out today to the Trinity/Pine Hills game as Trinity will be hosting. Most everybody else is playing baseball out of town except Huntington. ACCS is in town for a tennis match with Brookhaven Academy. If ya'll know something else, let us know on the Bulletin Board.

Well, Annika Soremstam shot 1 over on the first day of the Colonial Golf Tournament, I think it surprised alot of people and she said she was nervous the whole 18 holes! 35 players finished better than her and a decent round today could put her playing into the weekend.

The Cleveland Cavaliers won the NBA Lottery last night and will receive the first pick in the draft. And wouldn't you know it, he gets to stay in his home state and play basketball...that is if they pick him first!

Well this will be my last day to post the news in here until I get back from Grand Junction, CO. We'll be leaving for Jackson after lunch as I have to take care of the bus arrangements and pick up a few things in Jackson while I'm there, and then we'll catch the bus around 7:30pm tonight. I think it will probably take us around 28 hours to get there with all the stops to eat and fuel up but, it should be alot of fun with all the parents riding. We have 31 people riding the bus, so it should be interesting.

While I'm gone, next Wednesday on the Sports Buzz, I'll have the entire Down & Dirty Mud Races for your viewing pleasure, depending on when I get back, it could run for 2 weeks as I may not be back in time to get any footage for the next weeks show. So ya'll bear with me until I get back and get back in the groove of things.

Congratulations to Caleb Walker (ACCS), Robert Young (ASC), Jeremy Perkins (ASC) and Cody White (Centreville) on being selected to play in the 2003 MPSA All-Star Baseball game which will take place on Saturday, May 31st at Frierson Field on the campus of Mississippi College. A-AA will play at 2pm and AAA will play at 6pm.

The 2003 MPSA All-Star Softball games will be held the same day at the same field, representing the Miss-Lou will be: Meghan Marchbanks (ACCS) and Alesia Brown (ACCS). Game time is 11am. Way to go girls!

The SEC Baseball Tournament starts today in Hoover, AL and the Conference USA Tournament starts today in New Orleans.

Here's some advice, don't EVER take the roll of chartering a bus for a ballgame! I undertook this role while my emotions were high on Saturday and everybody else's were too! Just about everybody said they would ride the bus to Grand Junction, CO, so the cost was going to be minimal. Well guess what? They started folding on me like cheap lawn chairs! Thank goodness enough decided to ride the bus to make it cheaper than flying out anyway. I think it will be fun riding out and will shorten the ride but, the ride home could be long if the MCC Eagles don't fair too well! But, it's still an honor just to make it there. These players are young and will gain valuable experience for next year as they return all their starters except for 1 player in the field and 1 starting pitcher. The future's so bright...I gotta wear shades!

Meridian C.C. (38-17) will face Walter's State C.C. (TN) (44-11) on Sunday night at 7:30pm, if they win they will play on Tuesday at 7:30pm and if they lose, they will play on Tuesday at 11am.

There's plenty of action out there in the Miss-Lou, with baseball and softball going on, there's sure to be a game that will peak your interest, get out and catch some of these games!

Congratulations to former ACCS baseball star pitcher Jason Wimberly on signing with Kennesaw State in Marietta, GA, a division II powerhouse! Jason turned down offers from the University of Alabama - Birmingham and Birmingham Southern. Jason played at Meridian C.C. his first year and was medically red-shirted his sophomore year and then transferred to Wallace C.C., he'll have 2 years left to play at Kennesaw State.

I had a stressful weekend at Bay Minette, AL as Meridian C.C. played the allotted 3 games against Faulkner State C.C. to see who would get to go to the Junior College World Series in Grand Junction, CO. this weekend! MCC won the first game 6-5 on Friday and turned around and played again that same day and lost 6-4, Christopher was tagged with the loss as MCC could only muster 4 runs on 4 hits. So we spent the night and got ready for game 3 on Saturday. This 3rd game went back and forth and ended up tied going into the top of the 9th inning, MCC got a player on base on a walk, he stole 2nd base and Aaron George (St. Al) hit a shot that burned the centerfielder and allowed MCC to go ahead 7-6. MCC's Todd Doolittle (MSU Signee) shut the door in the bottom of the 9th as he struck one out and walked the next, FSCC tried a push bunt that was caught in the air and a throw over to 1st base allowed a game ending double play. MCC will be leaving for Grand Junction on Tuesday while the parents are taking a bus on Friday. The tournament starts on Saturday and will run through next Saturday. MCC will play their first game on Sunday at 7:30pm and their 2nd game (win or lose) will be on Tuesday.

Schools almost over for everybody and youth baseball and softball has sprung up everywhere, get out and watch our area youth play, it's a blast to see the talent that is in the Miss-Lou!

I want to wish Natchez High coach Sue Johnson the best of luck as she moves back home to take a coaching job at Murrah.

I'll be headed out early in the morning for Bay Minette, AL and the Super Regional baseball game between Meridian C.C. and Faulkner State C.C., the winner of the best of 3 series advances to the Jr. College World Series in Grand Junction, CO. Christopher is scheduled to pitch in the 6pm game on Friday so, he won't have to face his friend Carl Upton in the first game at 3pm. Upton played for Warren Central in high school and the Jackson 96'ers in the summer along with Christopher.

Natchez High sprinter Janice Davis is nominated for the 2003 PopStar Award by the MS. Sports Hall of Fame and Museum.

I want to congratulate the entire Vidalia Baseball team on a great year, they ended their season last night, but came away with an impressive 27-1 record for the year. Again, Vidalia is still the #1 public school in the 2A ranks as they were the only one that made the semi's. Ya'll should all hold your heads high because you guys earned alot of respect this year!

Girls Player of the Week - Janice Davis, Natchez: Davis, a senior, won the 100 (11.75), 200 (24.41) and 400 (54.80), anchored the winning 1,600 relay in the Class 5A state track meet. A Stanford signee, Davis won the 100, 200 and 400 for the fourth consecutive year in the 5A meet. She has the best reported times in Mississippi in the 100, 200 and 400 this year.

Coach of the Week - Larry Wesley, Natchez: Wesley's Lady Bulldogs outscored Gulfport 117-104 for their third straight Class 5A state championship in girls track and field and fourth in five years Saturday at Hughes Field. Wesley, 47, is in his second season at Natchez after serving as the Bulldogs' and Lady Bulldogs' junior varsity coach.

Stacy Mabry, ASC: Hit 3 home runs and drove in 6 runs in a 15-3 win over Adams Christian.

Brittany Walsh, ASC: Had 3 doubles, a triple and a homer, with 7 RBI's, in 3 wins for the Academy A title.

Kendrick Gibbons, Natchez: Finished first in the 5A 110 hurdles (14.56) and the long jump (23-1) and was second in the triple jump (47-2)

Tenika Hill, Natchez: Swept the hurdles at the 5A meet with times of 15.22 for the 100 and a best reported 44.43 for the 300.

It was a long weekend that got extended for me & my wife as we watched the first game at Meridian C.C. on Thursday and the last game that finished up at midnight on Sunday! Meridian C.C. won the Region 23 Division 1 Tournament and will face Faulkner State C.C. in a best of 3 series starting Friday at Bay Minette, AL. Christopher won his game on Friday going the full 9 inning distance against Delgado. They scored 2 runs in the first inning (both unearned) and then he shut the door as MCC won 6-2. Christopher is scheduled to pitch the first game this Friday against Carl Upton (Warren Central), they became friends after playing summer ball together and Carl even stayed at our house a few times this past summer. He's a great kid and a heck of a pitcher, neither one wants to pitch against the other but, we're just hoping the score ends 1-0 MCC.

So many congratulations are in order! ACCS girls softball team won 3A State, Amite School Center girls Softball won 1A State, Natchez High girls track team won 5A State...geez, I hope I ain't missing anybody that I haven't congratulated already! Way to go girls!!!!

Vidalia travels to Episcopal H.S. today to take on St. Fredrick in the semi's of the State 1A baseball tournament, best of luck to coach Johnny Lee Hoffpauir, his assistants and the team. With a Vidalia win tonight, they will play in the Championship game tomorrow night....GOOO VIKINGS!!!!

Not too much happening today in area sports, so there won't be much to report for tomorrow except for the Cathedral golf team, here's wishing them the best of luck on today's final round.

I talked with Christopher last night and Meridian C.C. will face MS. Delta (again) on Thursday, he said that the coach won't pitch him against them twice so he'll pitch on Friday. We had already made plans to be there on Thursday, so we're going anyway to help cheer the team on. I'll be here in the morning to post the news, then we'll head out sometime early in the morning.

I made alot of t-shirts yesterday with "The Sports Buzz" and a picture of the "Killer Bee" on them, so we'll be using them for promotions both in here and through the TV show.

The rains started yesterday and it looks like it may be here for awhile! So I'm not sure about how much sports action may take place this week in the Miss-Lou. Maybe things will clear up later in the week and I can have something to report on.

I played in the Beau Pre' C.C. Member/Guest Golf Tournament this weekend and after a tough day 1, we figured we could play a little better on Sunday, but the rain came and ended play earlier than expected, so we didn't get a chance to redeem ourselves in the final round. The course is in excellent shape, if you haven't played Beau Pre' in awhile, you owe it to yourself to get out there and whack it around this beautifully manicured course!

9/10 Sub-District Baseball is scheduled for today but, not sure about the rain? Natchez Rebel League is suppose to play Pine Hills League at 7pm at the Pig Pen (Ballew Bowlin)

15/16 East Central League is playing in Bastrop today at 7pm against the Northeast League, rain? Not sure about over there.

17/18 East Central League is playing in Rayville today at 7pm against Morehouse League...again, depending on rain.

9/10 Ferriday League's Vidalia team  to take on Winnsboro today at 5pm and Ferriday to play South Franklin at 8pm.

I really don't think anybodies going to play anything today unless they're into Bowling!!!!

Christopher came in yesterday after working the grounds crew at the State Games, he said that the Hinds C.C. District (comprised of Jackson & Vicksburg players) won it all. He said that they were loaded! He also mentioned that this may have been the least amount of quality pitchers in a State Games event. Douglas Davis (ACCS) was one of few bright spots on the mound during the tournament.

I had alot of correct answers to the trivia questions, but I have to go by the first correct answer...maybe next week guys!

I talked to John Mark Williams last night, his son Glenn is playing in the State Games of MS. Baseball Tournament. He said that Douglas Davis (on the mound last night) hit 88 mph! He was mostly around 85 mph but, he hit 87 mph quite a few times. They play for District 6 and despite Douglas only giving up 1 earned run, they lost the game 3-0 to District 5 (Hattiesburg). They'll play today at 1pm against District 8 (Gulf Coast) Glenn Williams had a hit in the 1st inning and threw a runner out from extreme right field that was trying to tag-up and get to third! Also on the team are: Te Riley, Garrett Jones and Jeremy Davis. Good Luck today guys!

The Beau Pre' C.C. Member/Guest Golf Tournament starts Saturday and I'll be playing with member David Cothren (aka OBC for you board readers) We tee off at 1pm tomorrow in what could turn out to be an interesting round as I'm just now kinda getting my game back on track. Congratulations for Natchez High's Janice Davis on being named the 2003 Gatorade Mississippi Athlete of the Year for 2003 in Track & Field. She Was the 2001 and 2002 Athlete of the Year,  Making it the 3rd straight year and the second female in the State to receive the honor three consecutive years.  The official notice was announced on the 16th of June.  She also received the Clarion Ledger Athlete of the Year for the 3rd Consecutive year, also leading the All State Team.

Virgil Kiser won this week's Trivia and I ain't so sure it's fair as this man knows EVERYTHING about ACCS athletics, he and his wife rarely miss an event at the school including summer time baseball games. The Kiser's were instrumental in helping put this school together in the beginning and have remained loyal fans long after their own kid's had graduated from the school. Every school should be so lucky to have fans that are true to their school as the Kiser's!

Today's the last day of the River City Baseball Camp and with Christopher leaving yesterday evening, I'll have to pull his duties today in his absence. Towards the end of today, we'll have some competitive games (that are also drills) that will keep everything exciting and fun. Next year the camp will he held earlier in the summer season so these young men can take what they learn back to their playing field.

The MS. Women's Amateur Golf Tournament is into day 3 today with more match-play. If you want to see some great golf, get out to Beau Pre' C.C. anytime today and catch these ladies in action!

The State Games of Mississippi starts today for local players Douglas Davis, Glenn Williams, Jeremy Davis Te Riley and Garrett Jones. They will be showing their skills off in front of college and pro scouts today and games start tomorrow. Best of luck guys! Christopher Rayborn will be on hand working the grounds crew for the host Meridian C.C., so maybe if some of the local guys get a little nervous, he can help calm them down.

The River City Baseball Camp heads into Day 2 of the hitting and fielding camp and with temperatures rising, we're doing everything to keep these young men from burning out. They're having fun and learning an easy approach to the game of baseball, after all, it is an easy game, huh?

Rice makes Stanford wish they had the old format back, where there's only one game because they got embarrassed last night 14-2! I love pulling for the under-dog and this series was no exception. Their first ever National Championship in ANY sport for Rice.

I watched some of the Adams County/Natchez baseball game yesterday and I'll tell ya, watch this Natchez team come spring, they just need a little help with some basics on the mound and they're gonna be tough!

The MS. Women's State Amateur Golf Championship starts today at Beau Pre' C.C., first tee time is 8:30am. I plan on going out and getting some footage for The Sports Buzz.

The Championship game for the College World Series is tonight at 6pm..will it be Rice or Stanford?

Congratulations to Heather Miller of Vidalia High as she signs with Southwest C.C. in Summit, MS to continue playing softball.

Tom Matthews scores yet another Hole-in-One, this time at Beau Pre' C.C. on hole #4 from 185 yds. out using a six-iron. This makes #6 for Tom but, the first that wasn't at Duncan Park G.C.

Tenieka Hill won the 400 hurdles and the 100 hurdles and Taji Dorsey won the 200 hurdles at the Greater King David Track Club Invitational in Port Allen, LA. Next weekend, they'll compete in the district at Monroe, LA to try and qualify for the regional meet to be held in Nashville, TN.

What? No answers or even guesses on the Trivia yet? Ya'll must be getting soft on ole Joey!

I had a full day yesterday! I helped out at the River City Baseball Camp from 9 til 12, got back to my office to download some footage and my video machine cleared everything in it! So I spent most of the evening getting everything back into it. I looked at my watch and remembered that there was a game out at Liberty Park between the Natchez Green Wave and Natchez Blue, so I went out to that game for awhile and before I knew it, it was time to get out to Duncan Park for the 9/10 All-Star game. Boy, talk about  hot shower feeling good when I got home!

The 9/10 All-Star game #2 will be today at 6pm with a third game to follow if necessary, there's some great action out at the ole Pig Pen, ya'll get out there and take a gander!

I'm looking forward to a easy weekend, ya'll have a good'un also and I'll see ya on Monday!

Well, the University of Mississippi is getting rid of the Ole Colonel Reb, at least that is what they're saying now. I saw an online poll conducted by one of the TV stations that showed that 80 something percent wanted to keep the logo as it is now. We'll just have to wait and see, want we?

Today is the last day of the River City Baseball Camp and I've got my radar gun charged up so these youngsters can see just how fast they can throw. Kids are always excited about speed but, I'm sure the instructors will explain all of this to them prior to the "airing it out" session. The Hitting/Fielding camp will start next Tuesday thru Thursday.

Day #1 of the River City Baseball Camp went off without a hitch! 24 pitchers and catchers showed up and got to spend alot of one-on-one time with the instructors. It's always fun to watch some of the younger ones trying to learn to be the next Greg Maddox or Randy Johnson! They've got the dream as do all little leaguers and hopefully they will attain that dream. The camp will end on Thursday and next weeks Hitting/Fielding camp should draw even more players out to the ACCS field.

The Mississippi Woman's Amateur Golf Tournament will be held at Beau Pre' C.C. starting next Monday, this is one of the biggest events that Natchez could ever have, so get out there and catch some of the action while it's in town!

Did ya'll see where the NBA Finals series had the lowest ratings ever? DUH!!!!! Shoot less than 30% from the floor next year and that ratings record may be beat AGAIN!!!!

Congratulations to former ACCS star Holli Hankins on being chosen to the National Junior & Community College Athletic Associations All-American Squad. Holli plays for Co-Lin C.C. in Wesson, MS. She batted .479 in her first year to ever play fast pitch softball!

I'll be out at ACCS this morning helping organize the River City Baseball Camp that starts today. It should be very educational for these young men to come out and learn to craft their skills on the diamond.

I went over to Vidalia last night and caught a couple of the Men's softball league play, it was very entertaining as their is alot of "Smack" talking on the field. You'll see what I mean on next weeks Sports Buzz.

This weeks Sports Buzz will have the Adams County team against the Natchez Green team from last week. It's summer ball, so no school names can be mentioned. Tune in on Wednesday evening for all the action!

Scott's Welding won the 9/10 City Championship over El Toro 10-9. Adam Kaiser was the winning pitcher, he also had a double as did Trevor Williams. Congratulations Scott's Welding!

Natchez High's Track Phenom Janice Davis finished 4th in the 200m prelims at the Adidas Outdoor Track & Field Championships, the hamstring that has bothered her on & off all season came back to haunt her again. Here's hoping she can now take some time off to get it healed before she heads off to Stanford to begin her collegiate career.

The Rev. Bill Hurt made a hole-in-one on Saturday out at Beau Pre' C.C. on hole #7, a 139 yd. par 3, he used a pitching wedge.

Jim Furyk won his first major at the U.S. Open yesterday shooting a 72 that gave him a 4 day total of 272, which ties the all time low score. He also picked up a little pocket change on his way to victory, $1.08 million!

LSU played 2 games in the College World Series as they got edged out yesterday by South Carolina 11-10. LSU's young, they'll be back next year as they started 6 sophomores and 1 freshman!

San Antonio Spurs win the NBA Championship over the New Jersey Nets 88-77 yesterday.

Well, the rain washed away all local sports action yesterday, so there's not much to report on in the Miss-Lou, so I'll run across a few things outside the area.

Tom Watson leads the U.S. Open  with Brett Quigley at -5. That's right, 53 year old Watson made some putts of old including a 40 footer!

LSU plays this evening at 6pm against Cal St. Fullerton on ESPN2 in their first game of the College World Series.

The Mitch Ashmore Baseball Camp got moved indoors yesterday but, the kids still got plenty of instruction and had a good time inside Huntington Gym. Today is the last day of the camp.

Also, don't forget that the River City Baseball Camp starts next Tuesday out at ACCS Field, registration is at 8:30am, camp starts at 9am and ends at noon. Calvin Harris (NHS & Miss. State) qualified for the finals at the NCAA Track & Field Championships. The 100 meter hurdler will go for it all on Saturday at Sacramento State University.

The NBA Finals are tied up at 2 apiece.....wow, this is some heart stopping action! (sarcastically speaking) I can't even get into it as these two teams just look lethargic out there on the floor!

Well, yesterday was a wash as my computer got some kind of "worm" and messed up everything, I spent the remainder of the day re-installing programs and getting everything back on my computer. This is the worst crash I've ever experienced in all the years that I've owned a computer...I even had an 8088 back in the day! Anyway, I'm pretty much back to operating normally.

LSU will face Cal State Fullerton on Friday at 6pm in their first game of the World Series in Omaha, Neb., Good Luck Tigers!

The Sports Buzz airs this evening at 5:30pm, local teams from the area will be shown. Next week's Sports Buzz will have the AC team vs. the Green Wave team.

Well, I didn't see much in the area sports scene this weekend as I traveled to Tunica, MS to watch Jeff Foxworthy. As I traveled back home yesterday, it dawned on me that, "If you travel 4-1/2 hours to watch Jeff Foxworthy....You might be a redneck!"

I did get to listen to the BIG Inning that LSU put on Baylor on the radio and got home to just in time to see ESPN change games because of the blow out! I also enjoyed watching the Yankees get beat last night...What has happened to the best team money can buy?

Bob Filotei, a  scout for the San Diego Padres, is coming to the house today at lunch time to go over the contract that we still can't figure out! Lisa is preparing a nice meal since Christopher told him not to worry about going anywhere to eat, that his mother would cook him something. How nice of him, huh?

James Covington has just found the Bulletin Board, he is a sports writer from Meadville and writes alot for the Brookhaven Newspaper, he's already written several articles about different players and posted them on the Board. Thanks James and we look forward to more!

Congratulations to Coach Ken Beesley on being inducted into the Crossroads Diamond Club's Hall of Fame. Coach Beesley will be honored between All-Star games this Saturday in Hattiesburg.

Also, a congratulations to Cathedral's Chris Norris, who will be playing for the South Team in the 1A/2A/3A All-Star game this Saturday in Hattiesburg, MS at Pete Taylor Park. Game time is 1pm.

With the 2nd day of the MLB Draft finishing off the last 30 rounds of the 50 round process, Christopher Rayborn was drafted in the 34th round and the 1001st pick overall by the San Diego Padres. After he was announced on MLB.com, the phone rang shortly afterwards and it was the area scout that we had talked to earlier in the season, Bob Filotei. He said that he would call back later in the night and set up a meeting with us here in Natchez and discus his plans that he had for Christopher. We feel that it will be a draft and follow, as they can watch him through next season and then make him an offer before the next June Draft. At that time, he can decide whether to play for the Padres or re-enter the draft or continue playing college ball. Whatever he does isn't important right now, because right now, it's just an honor to be drafted by the majors! 5 of his teammates at Meridian C.C. were drafted also in the late rounds 3B Van Pope (White Sox), P Matthew Creighton (Pirates) LF Josh Morgan ( White Sox), SS Brandon Rousseve (Devil Rays), P Brian Eubanks (Padres)
and one that will join them next year out of Provine H.S., so they'll have 7 draftees on the MCC roster next year!

The Fifth Annual Mitch Ashmore Baseball Camp will be held June 12-13 at Huntington Field. The camp will run from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on both days. Campers should bring a snack lunch. The cost of the camp is $60 for one child and $90 for two children from the same family.

Miss. State & former Natchez High hurdler Kelvin Harris finished in 4th place at the NCAA Mideast Regionals track meet and landed a spot in the National meet on June 11-14 in Sacramento, CA.

Congratulations to former ACCS athlete and Coach Bo Swilley on returning to the ranks and taking a few positions at Huntington School.

The Major League Draft starts today at noon and can be watched on MLB.com, Christopher has been hearing talk about his possibility of being drafted, but more as a draft and follow so they can watch him one more year at the college level. Whatever happens would be an honor anyway, he's not taking it too seriously as this happened last year as well. We'll probably follow along to see if any of his former or current friends get nabbed up along the way.

After being gone all week, I'm managing to get some footage for the Sports Buzz, so far I have a little footage of Christopher pitching in the JUCO World Series, the pick-up soccer game out at McLaurin and the ACCS girls basketball camp, which has teams from AC, Cathedral & Woodville playing scrimmage games. Depending on the weather (7 day forecast shows rain everyday) I hope to get some more footage tonight.

By word of mouth, I've heard that AC will play Natchez High today at 5pm at AC field, Cathedral will host Silliman today, the Ferriday Gators will play a team out of Alexandria at Huntington field tonight, this is suppose to be the best two teams in the state!

Glad to be back home, it was a long bus ride both there (26 hrs.) and back (30 hours), we stopped alot more coming back and our bus driver got lost a couple times. The experience these kids got for making the trip to the World Series was one that they'll never forget. Each team has a sponsor and Meridian's was the Redland Lions Club, they invited the team and all the parents, grandparents, brothers, sisters and players girlfriends out to their lodge for steaks, grilled chicken, all the trimmings and tons of desserts. The town of Grand Junction, CO rolls out the red carpet for these players and it's no wonder why they've kept it there every year! Meridian lost its opening game against Walters State 10-2 on Sunday night. MCC won on Tuesday night against Seminole C.C. 9-1, Christopher pitched in this game and the first batter, on a 2-1 count with a pitch delivered low and outside, pulled a hit to the left field fence for a double, the runner advanced to third base after the leftfielder bobbled the ball at the fence. That runner later scored on a fielders choice double play, so the run was unearned after a pop fly. Christopher's record for the year is 10 wins and 3 losses. We knew that going into the World Series that his ERA of 2.39 was the 7th lowest of all pitchers in the nation. MCC lost it's third and last game to Walters State again, it's just the way the bracket fell that we had to play them again. Walters State ended up coming in 3rd place while MCC was 5th. The players know that they want to come back next year and win it all and stand a really good chance by returning 7 of 8 starters in the field. They gained alot of experience and it should help them next year.

USM lost out at the regionals but not because Jarrett Hoffpauir wasn't playing well, he had a super series and should come home with his head up and proud of how he played this year. Good job Jarrett!

LSU is the only team that will advance from our area and they will play Baylor in the Super Regionals in a best of 3 series starting this Friday.

I went out yesterday and videoed the pick-up soccer game out at McLaurin School, they draw alot of players and have a great time competing against each other. Since I was gone all week, I'll have plenty of soccer to show on the sports buzz as well as some footage of Christopher pitching at the World Series. If the rain holds off, I'll get some action from area ball teams to show as well.

Boy did this month fly by or what? I know all the kids are ready to get back to school! I know I'm ready for them too! Do ya'lls kids go through as many cloths in a day that mine do? I think mine change every 3 hours whether they need to or not....and believe it or not, I do alot of the washing at my house!

I received an e-mail the other day telling me about some kids to add to my College Players list, they're added but, I want to congratulate Lauren Wagoner on going to play softball at Southwest C.C. and Miranda Doughty on signing with ULM, Lauren will join Heather Miller at SWCC.

I'm not a big politics person, in fact, I usually just grab the sports section of the paper when I head out the door every morning. But I've known Andrew Ketchings for over 30 years and he's definitely the man for the job as our State Treasurer, as I know his character, dedication, views and ability are what we need representing us here in the State of Mississippi. He's got my vote! Good Luck Andrew!!!!

The Natchez Junior Golf Championship starts today out at Duncan Park G.C., Lee Jones will be trying to defend his title but, it's going to be a little harder this year as young Jordan Farmer has been playing very well as of late. Cole Bradford is also another young talented golfer (that I got to play with last Sunday) that will be trying to make a run at the top spot, I'm just not sure how much that football practice this week will affect his game. Good Luck to all the golfers today!

The Trivia Questions must be tough this week, today is the last day to get your answers in or Joey will claim victory...and ya'll know how he acts when he wins! I hate it when Joey does the Snoopy dance!

I haven't been able to get on the Bulletin board much this week as I have been trying to get alot of stuff done so I can head out to Jackson, TN on Friday. Mike Smith and myself will be traveling up on Friday and the rest of the team will head up on Thursday. 107.1 FM "The River will be covering all the games. I'm not sure if the hotel we're staying at will have internet access or not. But I'll probably find some way to get the news of the tournament on the Bulletin board if possible.

I went out to ACCS yesterday for the evening practice and these young'uns are enduring alot of heat! Mostly just conditioning at this stage and going through technique drills. They have around 31 players out this year which will be hard playing AAA Football.

I also went by Trinity Episcopal and they were pretty much doing the same things, ie: conditioning. TE will have around 25 players this year, about 10 more than they had at this time last year. Alot of quickness will return and a high powered offense to boot!

I dropped by the Natchez 13's celebrations at the Main St. Marketplace and there were a number of fans also in attendance. The kids watched a highlight film of last weeks State Championship on the TV and had some great hamburgers on top of it all. The Natchez Lions club presented them with a check for $1,000.00 to help with expenses at the World Series, which at this point is getting pretty expensive for some of the parents! If you would like to give a donation for this team, call William Barnes and he'll even come by your office or home and pick up your donation. He can be reached at 597-1576 or 446-6122. This is a good cause and really needed, so give William a call today.

I ended my night watching softball out at First Baptist Church, it was the last game of the regular season and the State Church Softball Tournament starts this weekend in Jackson, MS.

Good Luck to Te Riley & Glenn Williams as they head to the World Series. They both play for the Jackson based 96'ers. A team comprised of players from all over Mississippi. Great competition and great fun for these guys, plus many scouts will be in attendance for most any game they play!

The Natchez 13's Dixie Boys State Champions are having a hamburger cook-out tonight at the Main Street Market Place at 7:30pm. Besides family and friends, all sponsors are invited. If you were not a sponsor during their run at the State Championship, show up tonight and bring your checkbook and give this team some support. Most of the parents have already taken their vacation to spend at State last week so, they'll be missing work with "no pay" next week. Please show your support by helping them out.

I want to wish Tanieka Hill and Taji Dorsey the best of luck at the USATF National Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships in Miami, FL. Hill will be competing in the 400 hurdles and Dorsey is the 200m.

Well it's good to be back home after spending an entire week of filming the Natchez 13 yr. old All-Stars State Baseball Tournament in Hattiesburg. But it was well worth the time there as I got to know these kids a little better and I saw some great baseball in the process. They'll play next at the World Series in Jackson, TN starting at 2pm this coming Saturday. I'm not sure just yet if they want me to come and film these games as well. Also, I'm not sure about the radio coverage yet either. I'll let ya'll know any information as soon as I receive it.

I got back from Hattiesburg and finally got to sleep around 2am Saturday morning and then had a 10:16am tee off time for the City Championship Golf Tournament  out at Duncan Park. I didn't play to badly as I shot a 78 and made the bottom of the 1st flight with four shots to make up on the competition on Sunday's round. Well, it didn't happen as I shot an 81, not last place in my flight, but not a competitive round for this flight.

Jay Lessley won the Bill McKenney City Golf Championship by shooting a first day score of 5 under and followed up with a 1 under on Sunday to claim the title for his third time. Congratulations Jay!

Dan Bland won the first flight with a 2 day total of 144. Jamie Spring won the second flight with a 151. Lloyd Gilbert won the third flight with a 167. Cookie Wilson won the fourth flight with a 176 and Richard Durkin won the fifth flight with a 187.

Congratulations to Trinity Episcopal on capturing the MPSA Class 1A All Sports Award. How a school finishes in all sports is added up by a point system and Trinity had a terrific year last year and earned this prestigious award.

The Natchez 11/12 All-Stars lost to Summit 7-1 0n Tuesday night and then faced Brookhaven Nationals and lost that game 8-7, Aaron White had a double in the 2nd game. Natchez is eliminated from the District Tournament.

Franklin County Dixie Youth Girls Softball 11 and 12 All-stars won their District Tournament at Franklin County held this past weekend and are State Bound to Iuka, MS on July 17th!

I played hooky yesterday as I received a phone call from Gill Morris on Tuesday night inviting me to go fishing at the Old River at Minorca. He picked me up at 6:30am yesterday morning and we had high hopes of limiting out on some perch jerking. Well, the perch weren't jerking so well and we only managed a few along with a few really nice bream (the kind you can fillet), so we decided to do a little bass fishing at a spot (that Gill doesn't want me to reveal to anyone) and we landed a few nice bass on a crankbait. We headed back to the fish camp and had some lunch and decided to try and give the perch another jerk. No too well again, only landing a few and a couple more nice bream. So back off to Gill's "Honey Hole" we go and we crank a few more bass and then we start worm fishing and Gill catches a nice one out in the deep water off of the point that we're fishing. So I tie one on and we're both catching nicer bass. I caught one that probably around 4-1/2 lbs. but we had a few that were in the 2-3 lb range. I think all total we had 11 nice bass, 6 or so perch and about the same in bream. Anyway, I came home with 5 bags of fillets and ate 2 of them last night and had to put fried fish in the "frig" because we couldn't eat all of it in one sitting! By the way..Gill let me keep all the fish since I was fishless in the freezer department at home. It was a good trip despite not being able to limit out on the perch, catching those strong river bass was worth the time spent on water yesterday. I'm sure Gill is happy, as I passed on some valuable fishing tips to him throughout the day that he will be able to utilize in his fishing experiences for the rest of his life!

Natchez 11/12 All-Stars opened up District play at Brookhaven last night and beat the Brookhaven Americans 8-0. Jordan Dossett was the winning pitcher. They'll play Summit tonight at 8pm.

Billy Freeman called me yesterday and told me that this Summit team mentioned above, will be the ones to beat, he said they are loaded and cake walked through sub-district. He said they had over powering pitchers and they hit the ball extremely well.

I watched MLB Home-Run Derby last night and it was the best yet! Garrett Anderson won the event over Albert Pujols 9-8.

The MLB All-Star game is tonight at 7pm on Fox.

The main trivia question got answered but, there are 2 more still up there and I know somebody will get these!

Vidalia 9/10 lost out at the District 6 Tournament to Caldwell 4-2. Dee Fleming doubled in the game.

Natchez T.M. Jennings 13/14 beat Clark County 9-2 in the Little League District Tournament in Hattiesburg. Travis Isaac got the win and had 10 K's. Grennell and Isaac each had doubles.

Natchez High's Tenieka Hill places 2nd at the USA Track & Field Regional Meet in the 400m hurdles (61.73). She'll compete in the National's July 30th thru August 3rd in Miami, FL. Taji Dorsey will go as an alternate in the 200m as she placed 4th with a time of 25.21 seconds.

Tommy Geoghegan & Stephen Hollingsworth won the Wharlest Jackson Elks Lodge Scramble at Dincan Park G.C. on Sunday. After a first day score of 63, they shot lights out and posted a 2nd day score of 59 for a total of 122. Three time defending champions Gary Farmer & David Cothren finished in 2nd place at 124. I got some footage of this tournament on Saturday and I'll have it on the Sports Buzz this coming Wednesday.

Congratulations to Chad Huber, Adrian Sandel, Kurt Russ and Chris Kelly on winning the Buick Scramble out at Beau Pre' C.C. this past Saturday. They'll move on to the next level in August in Hattiesburg where they'll be playing a tough Canebrake C.C. golf course. Good Luck guys!

I'm suppose to head out to the big metropolis of Harriston, MS today to visit my in-laws and get in some fishing with my son. I'll have a fishing report when I get back tomorrow.....hopefully!

Natchez 11/12 All-Stars won over Pine Hills 9-7. Cody Floyd was the winning pitcher. Aaron White, Ryan Comer and Rudy Lazarus each doubled and Daniel Jenkins and Cody Floyd homered. In the Championship game, Natchez won 1-0 over Pine Hills. Collin Dollar was the winning pitcher. They move on to District play in Brookhaven on Monday.

Natchez 9/10 All-Stars won the District Tournament over McComb 1-0. Tyler Morrison was the winning pitcher. Garrett Smith had a double. They'll play in the State Tournament which starts on July 19th.

Ferriday 9/10 All-Stars lost to Catahoula 13-3.

Vidalia 9/10 All-Stars beat South Franklin 16-14.

Vidalia 11/12 dropped a pair to Catahoula last night, 7-5 in both games.

Natchez 13 All-Stars beat Summit 9-4. Ryan Ratcliff was the winning pitcher. They move on to State starting July 19th in Hattiesburg.

Trinity boys basketball team won over Magnolia Hts. then lost to MRA #2, then they beat Hillcrest and lost to Columbia Academy. They ended the Round Robin play 10-2 and earned the #1 seed for the single elimination tournament starting today.

I'll be out most of the day, I'm headed to Baton Rouge to look for a new computer, this one's about had it! I'm not sure if I'll be able to post in news in the morning so, check the Bulletin Board for any scores that might be of interest.

Natchez 11/12 All-Stars beat Franklin County 3-1. Jordan Dossett got the win and Dylan White doubled. They'll play Pine Hills today at 6pm.

Ferriday 9/10 was down 12-3 when play was called due to the weather.

Ferriday 11/12 lost to Winnsboro 4-3. Josh Lee homers along with Hunter Martin.

Ferriday Gators softball team lost to Winnsboro 3-1. Tiffany Ferguson doubled in the contest. Ferriday is eliminated from the contest.

The Trinity boys basketball team is still undefeated at the MRA Team Basketball Camp. They beat Delta Academy, MRA #2, Heritage Academy and MRA #1 yesterday. They are one of only two teams that haven't lost a game yet!

Some of the baseball games yesterday were rained out or postponed until today. Other games are still on schedule for today. The weather man says expect more of the same this evening...let's hope that it holds off!

I went out to the ballpark yesterday and got some of the Ferriday 11/12 vs. Winnsboro before the rains came in. Ferriday was winning this game 3-0 at one time and one bad inning allowed Winnsboro to come storming back in! A well played game by both teams.

Natchez 11/12 All-Stars lost to Pine Hills 7-3. They'll play Franklin County today at 6pm in Port Gibson.

Natchez 9/10 All-Stars beat Brookhaven 14-4.  They won't play again until Wednesday at 6pm in Summit.

Vidalia 9/10 beat Catahoula 11-1 and Ferriday beat Winnsboro 22-8. Ferriday will play Catahoula today at 6pm and Vidalia will play South Franklin at 8pm tonight. These games are played in Ferriday.

Ferriday 11/12 beat South Franklin 3-1, they'll play Winnsboro today at 6pm in Vidalia. Vidalia will play Catahoula at 8pm.

Natchez 13's beat Brookhaven 14-1 and will play again on Wednesday at 6pm in Brookhaven.

Natchez 14's lost to Summit 2-0. They will play Brookhaven today at 6:30pm in Summit.

The Ferriday Gators softball team beat Delhi 15-0. They'll play Winnsboro today at 6pm in Delhi.

Trinity Episcopal won 4 games on Monday at the MRA Team Basketball Camp. They beat Hillcrest 42-33, Lamar 39-18, Cleveland High 49-29 and Brookhaven Academy 39-25. There are 41 teams competing at the camp from both private and public schools. The camp will last for 4 days.

Well, one thing led to another yesterday and I didn't make it to any of the ballgames yesterday, hopefully I can get out this evening and get some footage for ya'll to watch next week.

Duncan Park G.C. lost 2/3's of its greens earlier last month but, they sprigged them and now they look even better than before! It could have been a blessing for the greenskeeper because they are coming back better than ever. The playing field for the City Championship will be large and if you are interested in playing, you better sign up early!

I hope everybody had a great 4th of July weekend. I played alot of Golf this weekend over at Panola C.C., if you haven't played there in awhile, you need to get over there and I promise, you'll be for a surprise! If you didn't know, they removed all the grass on the greens and added contour to the greens and then sprigged it with new Tiff grass. They roll true and it seems that almost every putt breaks one way or another now. Also, Panola always had pretty good biting greens but, now they spin even better! Hats off to all the grounds people over there, you did a great job!

I'm sure you've been reading the papers and our local contingencies have been tearing it up in post season play, and that play will continue through this week. Get out and watch some of these All-Star teams compete.

Yesterday I didn't do anything but try and watch a rain delayed Western Open on TV, Tiger ran away from the field...again! (breaking more records along the way) The British Open starts in 2 weeks and Tiger seems poised and ready for yet another Major.

This week's Sports Buzz will have the 9/10 All-Star Sub-District game played last week and some highlights from the Beau Pre' C.C. Member/Guest Golf Tournament. I hope ya'll are enjoying the format for the summer but, I can't wait for Football season to start!

I got my first truckload of Strongbuilt Deer Stands delivered last Friday and another truck is coming today with displays to set-up out by the highway. I'm ready to start selling them today so, come on out and take a look around.

This past Saturday, I played golf with Will Clifton, he writes sports for the Jonesville Newspaper, he's suppose to start sending me his articles every week, so now we'll have a broader coverage of more sports around the Miss-Lou!

The new Trivia is posted today, Joey sent them to me on Friday but, I was already gone for the day, so get your guesses in and get that Free T-shirt!!!

If the rain holds off, I hope to get out and watch some baseball today over in Vidalia and catch some footage for an upcoming show.

The T.M. Jennings Senior League Championship Game was won by Sports Center over Coca-Cola 22-17. Jermaine Albert was the winning pitcher while Timothy Johnson was tagged with the loss. Coke's Freddie Hauer had 2 doubles in the contest and teammates Travis Issac and James Williams also had doubles. Coke's Avrion Grennell had a triple.

East Central 17/18 team lost to Northeast 5-4 on Wednesday. Bronson Rhodes got the loss. A.J. Smith had 2 doubles. Joey Wilson had a homerun.

The Natchez 11/12 All-Stars get kicked off today in Port Gibson, they'll play Franklin County at 6pm.

Vidalia's Minor League & Major League will start this weekend.

Congratulations to Cathedral's Chris Norris on signing with Belhaven College to play baseball next season.

Cathedral names 2 new coaches to their successful soccer program. Rick Freeman will coach the boys and Christine Krupa will head up the girls team. Good Luck next season!

Natchez 9/10 Rebel League wins'em BOTH! to pull off the upset over the Natchez Confederate's and will play in the District Tournament starting next week. In game one, Hunter Hatcher was the winning pitcher while Trevor Williams was tagged with the loss. Collin Hammons hit a double for the Confederate's. Christopher Perry hit a home-run for the Rebel League. In game two, Tyler Morrison was the winning pitcher and Ryan Goddard got tagged with the loss. Confederate's Dylan Pressgrove picked up a double and Rebel's Jamon Gray also doubled in the contest. The Natchez Rebel League had lost all three previous match-ups against the Confederate League prior to last night. You got to give it to them for hanging in and never giving up!

The East Central All-Stars (17/18) beat Caldwell 3-2, Mac Ware picked up the win on the hill and Gregory Ketchings and A.J. Smith each doubled.

I was at the 9/10 game last night and as I walked around the ball-park and saw many of the players that attended the River City Baseball Camp, the responses weren't, "Hey Mr. Keith", everyone that I saw asked, "Is Christopher here?" Well he was and I would point him out to all of them that asked. He made quite an impression on those young'uns during the camp days and they wanted to impress him. After game 1, some of them would ask him, "Did you see my catch? or did you see my hit?" they were proud and when he acknowledged, it seemed to make their day!

Well, my wife and daughter are leaving today headed for Gulf Shores, AL and won't be back until next Tuesday so.....If anybody has any leftovers from supper, give me and Christopher a call, we'll be glad to come over and finish off anything that's left on the table....provided it's edible of course!

I have to mention this and it has nothing to do with the Local Sports Scene but, I watched Washington Coach Rick Neuheisel in an interview on ESPN about his gambling on NCAA Basketball through a local group friends, he even went as far as asking permission about this pool and was told he could by the school's attorney. Now he's getting fired! He seems like a nice guy and I hope that he gets cleared because there's a difference between gambling and friendly wagering, and besides, it was basketball, not football, where he's a coach! That's just my opinion and it may be wrong but, I believe there are alot more worse things going on in college football than this!!!!

Congratulations to Natchez High's Karmethia Mazique on getting 5 hits in the MHSAA All-Star Softball game including one double. Karmethia will play basketball next year for Meridian C.C. where she'll be shooting at a spot at point guard. Coach Hillary Allen is excited about this young girl and her chances of becoming a starter.

Christopher's cell phone rings all the time from his playing buddy's at Meridian C.C., and last night he got some good news as their starting freshman short-stop called and said that he'd be returning to MCC for his sophomore year. Tulane had offered him a full ride and Alabama had offered him 75%. But being drafted out of High School by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays and again by the same team this past draft. He wanted to keep his draft eligibility open and he can do so by staying at the JUCO level. Now all we have to do is wait out last year's starting 3rd baseman Van Pope, who's ripping the ball in a wooden bat summer league up North and getting good looks by the team that drafted him this year, the Chicago White Sox. It's very possible that they may make him an offer at summer's end. He's leading all players in home-runs and is second in batting average up North.

I went out to Cathedral yesterday and watched some football practice, they were getting ready for Block and the rumor has it that Block is looking for revenge after Cathedral spanked them the last 2 years during the regular season games. Cathedral doesn't have Block on their schedule this year so, this game should be exciting to watch at the Vidalia Jamboree.

I went to the gazebo on the bluff yesterday evening to check out Porky's new sports radio show that he is co-hosting with Andi, there was a pretty good turnout to kick off their debut show which will air every Tuesday from 7pm until 8pm Live from Bowie's Tavern. 

Well, all 5 local teams will be competing in football this weekend, ACCS will have the only home game on Friday night, Natchez High will travel to Port Gibson to kick off their first game of the year and Trinity will travel to Plain Dealing looking to go 2-0 on the season. Saturday night will see Cathedral and Vidalia getting into action in the Vidalia Jamboree, not against each other but, each team will play 2 quarters against 2 different schools with Vidalia in the finale with Ferriday, which is always a barn burner!

Vidalia's very own Josh Hoffpauir of the MLB's Bowie Baysox (AA) continued his hot streak, going 3-5 night before last, including a double and an RBI.  Josh is batting .294 on the year, second on the Baysox, with 5 games remaining.

Cathedral's Lady Green Wave will host Lawrence County today in a doubleheader starting at 6pm.

I went out to Natchez High yesterday and I counted 49 players, they seem to be pumped up about this Friday nights game against Port Gibson. They were running sprints and blaming Port Gibson for having to run them! Look for the Bulldogs to be 1-0 after Friday night.

I went over to the Lady Bulldogs practice and their two pitchers, Tasha Davis and Krystal Arnold were practicing pitching. They had a big screen in front of the pitchers mound that they had to throw over and a 5 gallon bucket behind home plate that they were trying to land the ball in. So as Krystal was taking her turn, I challenged her to a pitch off, first one to make it in the bucket wins! I thought maybe by creating some competition, it would help her. Of course I haven't thrown a softball in 6 years, as a matter of fact, Krystal was on my team back then but, I figured I'd give it a whirl. Krystal hit the edge on  one throw and I could see her getting nervous on a few of mine that were close (as well as her teammates egging it on) Well, I made it first and them girls were giggling everywhere! I did notice that while doing this, that Krystal was pitching the ball better, and as I left, I hollered at Krystal one last time and pointed at myself and held up my finger in the #1 sign. She gave me that disgruntled grin as I exited the field.

I went out to ACCS and caught the tail-end of practice, Coach Walters said that while Washington lost some quality players from last year, that doesn't mean they will be weak by no means. The Johnson kid at running back is the real deal and AC will have their hands full trying to contain him. AC will try to offset with ground control and use the clock in their favor. Luke Ogden is OK, his sternum just hurts when he breathes real deeply but, he'll be ready to go on Friday night.

Here's something that I never thought of before and Coach Walters was telling me about it, he poised this question to me, How long does a high school football game last, from snap to whistle? Answer: 7 to 9 minutes. Think about it, most plays last from 4 to 8 seconds, probably the lesser of the seconds as dive plays are the shortest. There are roughly 80 plays in an average ballgame. Do the math, coach Walters even broke down a game film and did the timing himself as he didn't believe it either. So the point of this is: Why wouldn't you as a player, not "Put Out" for 7 to 9 minutes a game? It ought to be easy!

I watched some of the Cathedral/Natchez High softball game yesterday, the paper said it was the 2nd inning but, I'm pretty sure it was the third inning when Cathedral was down 6-0 and put on a hitting clinic (along with some walks) and put 12 runs on the board! Natchez High struggled from the rubber and had to make a pitching change. Natchez High came back late in the game and almost pulled off a win but, a pop-up to short ended the rally.

Travis Allen - WCCA - Carried 17 times for 114 yds. and returned a fumble 70 yds. for a TD in a 21-14 loss to Oak Forest.

I hope ya'll had a great weekend! I watched the first part of the Trinity/CHA game on Friday night and CHA didn't show anything different than they did last year! They dressed out 30 something players and they looked like they had decent size but, they weren't very organized in my opinion. Trinity scored on every possession while I was there, I left after a few minutes in the 2nd quarter with the score 27-0 in favor of TE. This week won't be much better  for the Saints, as far as good competition is concerned, as they travel to Plain Dealing, a team that TE could have scored over 100 pts. on last year! But Trinity is gaining game experience and working on making less mistakes for when the better teams come around.

I caught the last 2 quarters of the AC/Huntington game, I was told that Huntington moved the ball pretty good the first half but, I didn't see much of it while I was there. HHS had some good sized players and should fare well this year. I was told that Huntington never punted the ball in this contest, they either turned it over on possessions, fumbled or had passes intercepted. The AC line looked better than it did last week against Trinity but, there's still more work to be done as AC will host Washington this Friday night.

Natchez High Lady Bulldogs won the Franklin County Softball Tournament this past weekend and they have extended their winning streak to 5-0 on the season. Natchez High will play Cathedral today.

I received an e-mail from Bo & Penny Lovitt, they moved to Oak Grove 10 years ago, and their son Cameron, played soccer there, as well as Select team during the off season. He received a scholarship to play at Pearl River C.C., congratulations Cameron!

Fact or Fiction???? I received an e-mail that said that Pine Hills Academy's Varsity Quarterback is 6'1" Lee Turner....... a 13yr. old eighth grader! And they say he's great! Good Luck PHA! I know things have been shaky around the school situation.

I mentioned yesterday that 13 yr. old phenom Michelle Wie was playing in her first men's tournament at the Bay Mills Open Players Championship, she shot a 2 over 74 and she is 8 shots back off the leader. She hit numerous drives over 300 yds. yesterday.

I went out to Natchez High yesterday to film the game between them and Cathedral but, I guess the lightening was too much for them to play, plus a little moisture! I left and told Leigh Ann to call me if something changed, I never heard from her so I guess it was cancelled. The last time these two teams played, it was a mud bog out on the field. I'll find out if they plan on making the game up at a later date.

13 yr. old Michelle Wie will face off against the men in the Bay Mills Open Players Championship Golf Tournament. She hits 300 yd. drives regularly and will try to find the fairways more than she did last week at the LPGA Jamie Farr Kroger Classic, where she missed the cut by shooting 73-72. She'll be the third woman to compete in a men's tournament when she tee's it up this weekend.

I plan on getting some footage from the CHS/NHS softball game today, I hope they don't make me stay up against the fence!

I'm looking forward to 4 quarters of football this Friday night, I'll probably start out with the Trinity/CHA game and then head over to the AC/HHS game. I hope to get interviews with coaches and players, some before the game and some afterwards. It should be a great night of football.

Vidalia will play Jena in a scrimmage on Friday night, and their JV will get to scrimmage also. This will be a good test for Vidalia as they prepare for the upcoming Jamboree that they host every year, which will be held next Saturday night.

Boy, is my wife getting old, our son turned 20 yrs. old yesterday! It seems just like a couple of years ago he was playing Tee Ball! My advice to all young parents, Get involved with your kids sports and enjoy it as long as you can, they grow up faster than you think!

I went by Trinity yesterday and talked to David King, he pulled the wool over my eyes talking about what a great team CHA had this year, he even went in depth about 14 kids that had transferred in from their parent school, French Camp. He even has Marcus Dupre's son on the team! I told a few people about it and after I got home that night, I got to thinking about last years team and thought that it was just to good to be true, so I made a phone call and that's when the laughter started. But that's OK, to take a line from the great Bugs Bunny, "He don't know very well, do he?" So, Coach King, when you least expect it.....expect it!!!!

I went by Cathedral for their 2nd day in full pads as I was anxious to see how this crew was hit, well I missed it because on Monday they were stroking and a few injuries caused them to lighten up  some yesterday, they were still butting heads on some fundamental drills, but I was ready to see some full contact Oklahoma Drills! Cathedral is not very big up front and will have to make up the difference in speed.

Next I went over to Vidalia and when I got there, they were going through all the special team drills. I swear, I need to video Coach Faircloth every time I visit him. He has more stories than anyone! He'll leave you laughing every time! Vidalia is loaded although they are not very deep on the line, they need to keep them healthy up front. Other than that, watch out!

Saturday night was everything that it was built up to be! A great football game that both sides could walk away from and know that they had good football teams. Trinity gave ACCS everything they wanted and then some in the first quarter. Trinity is loaded with speed with Chase Brown, Gregory Ketchings and Dudley Guice, and a better line than they had a year ago. Sure TE made some mistakes and some costly ones but, that's what a Jamboree's suppose to bring out, to help the players and coaches get a grasp on things before the regular season.  Ac had their mistakes as well. Nobody should hang their head over this game and nobody should be bragging, that's my opinion! TE won one quarter and AC won the other behind a strong rushing performance by Luke Ogden, who showed why he was the leading rusher in the MPSA last year. Dustin Case and David Barnes played well in Luke's absence from most of the game, as he landed on the ball after a long haul and bruised his sternum. All in all, it was just what the Miss-Lou needed, a good clean cross-town rivalry. I wish both teams the best of luck on the upcoming season!

Another no-namer wins a Major! Shaun Micheel won the PGA and he hit a spectacular 2nd shot on the 18th within inches to sew up the victory. The Grand Slam of Golf Tournament which features the winners of the four majors teeing it up agisnt each other is really going to have a different look than years past, especially without Tigger being there!

I saw the Sunday edition of the Clarion Ledger's Dandy Dozen and was surprised when I got to the section where they listed over 100 of the top seniors to watch and Luke Ogden wasn't even listed! I'm sorry but, ANYBODY that leads the MPSA in rushing as a junior SHOULD have been listed! Not to mention a few other locals that should be on there, I won't list them because I'd probably forget somebody or hurt others feelings. Get your act together Ledger! It ain't always just about Jackson!

I got my son packed up and moved in back at Meridian C.C., he's rooming this year with Kyle Ginn from Parklane Academy. As I walked around the dorm yesterday and met some of the new players, I couldn't help but get a little excited in anticipation of next years games. MCC is loaded for Bear! All of the defense is back minus a right fielder, which will easily be filled, and a pitching corp that a lot of D1 schools would envy. I could just look at the coaches and tell they wanted to play now!

As I read the Bulletin Board this morning, I was a little ashamed of the attitudes that a few of the younger participants had regarding Saturday nights Jamboree. But I also had to remind myself that they are young and make mistakes that they later wish they hadn't. It's easy to get caught up in the excitement and lose control, but that's part of life and growing up. I even received some apologies for their conduct via e-mail. That to me, showed a lot of class!

If ever, I was disappointed at the Natchez Democrat, it's today! Where are my comics???? I always just grab the Sports section as I head out the door every morning and I was shocked and stunned when I didn't get to read what Garfield did today!

The Cathedral Stag Benefit is tonight at the Elks Lodge, you can buy tickets for the steak supper at the door.

The ACCS/Trinity Jamboree is Saturday night and a record crowd is expected to be in attendance, if you're planning on going to the game, I'll pass along a couple of words of advice, Be there early if you want to get a seat and Be on your best behavior! This is going to be a great scrimmage and we need to show our players, fans and the non participating kids in the stands, how to act like adults!

I was reading the paper about this match-up and I was helping coach out at ACCS with Bobby Marks the last time these two teams played an actual game. Can anybody remember the last time they played a real game before that? It was my Junior year (1977/1978), Trinity was loaded that year and when we played them on the last game of the year, Trinity had only given up 1 TD all year! Richard Wadsworth was just brutal! His thighs were bigger around than my waist! Adams Christian's head coach ran dive play after dive play that first half and accounted for nothing! but AC sophomore Bobby Strong ran back the opening kick-off in the second half for AC's first touchdown. AC decide to try something different in the second half and Senior Quarterback Ronnie Smith exited the game for Junior QB Terry Moffett, who started picking the Trinity defensive secondary apart like a seasoned pro! He accounted for 1 touchdown passing and threw several passes on the money that night before he was pulled with a few seconds left on the clock with the Rebels on about the 5 yd. line, back in came Ronnie Smith who threw a touchdown pass with time expiring and with AC falling short to Trinity 26-18.

Ole Lefty, Phil Mickelson is co-leading after day one of the PGA Championship, anybody giving any odds on him choking? Tigger (spelled that way on purpose) is at +4 after the first day and if he doesn't make a move today, he can go home and watch it on TV like me!

I had talked to Patrick Biglane when he came by the house a couple of weeks ago about his possibility of going to Delta State to play soccer, at that time, they weren't offering him any scholarship money and that they wanted to red-shirt him. I told him he better go for it, that he would regret it one day if he didn't. I saw Pat Biglane at the MSU Alumni banquet and he told me (under strict confidence) that the coach just wanted to see how dedicated Patrick was about playing soccer at D-State and that they were going to offer him a scholarship. Pat told me that he would let me know when I could say something and I open up the paper today and see where he's already signed...Thanks Pat! lol.............Congratulations Patrick, you'll do well!

Strange reading about ACCS Basketball Coach Ricky Gray leaving in today's Democrat, I was talking to his dad yesterday about his leaving out at the school.  Mr. Gray told me that Ricky had made a hard decision and that he was making the move because of his family. Enterprise made him an offer he couldn't refuse and with his wife already working at the hospital over there, the decision was easily made. I wish him the best of luck and I'm sure he'll turn that program around.

What the deal with the Trivia this week? Nobody can answer any of the questions? Are they that hard? Or has Joey just tripped ya'll up? Don't let him get away with it!

I went out to some football practices yesterday, first I went to ACCS and talked with coach Keith Walters, his team is excited about this weekend and the match-up with Trinity. Coach told me that earlier in the week, he told Luke Ogden, "You know I'm not playing you against Trinity" He said Luke gave him a look that he'll never forget! AC is dressing out 29 players this year.

Next I went over to Cathedral to see how they were progressing, as I got to the field, I saw that nobody was around, so I drove on up to the field house and started to walk inside when I heard coach Ken Beesley going through a speech, so I just loaded myself back up and headed to Natchez High.

Natchez High will have more than 30 players, school has started back and a few more kids are coming out for football. They were in full pads and knocking heads in various drills. Geez, they have some big young'uns! The coaches are pushing these young men hard and maybe this year will be the year that they turn things around!

I went over and visited Leigh Ann Mason, the new NHS softball coach, she was hitting balls to different position players as I was walking up. I looked at two girls who were standing at third base and said, "Ya'll know that blond is crazy, huh?" They said, "Yes sir, she IS crazy" but they laughed as they said it. They kick off their season at home today against Cathedral at 5pm.

I was all ready to watch the Saints last night and see what I could expect for the upcoming season, well, I'm glad I'm a San Diego Chargers fan! The Saints secondary will get thrashed this year if things don't change, they looked horrible! I turned off the TV!

Ahhhhh, one down and one to go! Morgan started school today, I'll get rid of Christopher next Sunday and things will be a lot quieter at my house...... well, except for me!

Mary Edwards claims her 4th straight City Championship out at Duncan Park G.C. by shooting a two day total of 79-78 = 157. Beverly Knapp won the Ladies Senior Championship, her second by shooting a 80-81= 161. Kay Bourdin won the Ladies New Golfer Group by firing a 97-100= 197.

The Senior Men's City Champion went to Prem Vindha, who also won the Super Senior's with a 74-72= 146. And Pete Buttross won the Legends Men's Title with a 95-93= 188.

Congratulations to Joanna Stubbs (CHS) on receiving a scholarship to play soccer at Centenary College!

I saw a rare feat on TV last night as I watched the Atlanta Braves play against the Cardinals. A line drive was hit towards a leaping Rafael Furcal, who snagged the ball out of the air, touched 2nd base and then tagged the runner that was coming to 2nd base. An unassisted triple play. There have only been 11 performed in the many years that baseball has been played!

I believe that most all the schools are open for business, I'm not sure about Cathedral though, so, it's officially time for the Bulletin Board to start cranking back up. Already a few heated discussions have came up but, I'm sure with everybody settling back down to the school time grind, there will be more to follow.

I was reading the Democrat today and I always check out the "Looking Back" section. Well, 20 years ago today, Gill Morris, who has been a teacher and asst. baseball coach at South Natchez for several years, is hired by Colonels head football coach Joey Porter to be the offensive line coach.........Well, this had me thinking, "What was I doing 20 years ago?" Well, Lisa was about to burst as Christopher was born on August 19, 1983 and she was past due! So I'm pretty sure that I was a nervous 22 yr. old wreck!

Anyway, back to sports, the New Orleans Saints kick off Pre-Season tonight against the Philadelphia Eagles at 7pm on ESPN.

I listened to the first Barr & Jerry Sports Review of the season this past Saturday and they had some great interviews, it'll be even more interesting this coming weekend as the big ACCS/Trinity game will take place that night out at Bobby Marks Field on the grounds of ACCS.

Jerry & I finally got the season opening Sports Buzz program ready for viewing on Wednesday night, don't forget that the new time is from 6pm to 7pm and the re-run will air on Sunday at the same time.

In 1971, Vidalia and Cathedral renewed their football rivalry after a long absence. Vidalia shut out Cathedral 24-0. The first Vidalia score came when Gary Higgs tackled this Green Wave player in his own end zone for a safety. Who was the Cathedral player? Answer: Who knows? Loser: Joey Martin.

I've been busy lately putting the Natchez 13 yr. old All-Stars video's together from their State Championship through the World Series, and  it's been trying as I'm trying to prepare for the upcoming football season and the beginning of the Sports Buzz season for Jerry & I to get back in front of the camera. Yesterday, I interviewed Coaches Keith Walters, James Denson and David King for next weeks show. I've done alot of changes to the scenery in the studio and it will be much more pleasing that just a desk and sign. Tune in next Wednesday, we're ready to go!

I went to the Eola Hotel yesterday evening and brought Christopher along with me to meet Miss. State Baseball Coach Ron Polk. There were probably around 40 people in attendance and the atmosphere was great! We met Coach Polk and he talked to us for several minutes. He knew of Christopher but, he explained that his team was really young with only 3 seniors and he only had 1.6 scholarships available and that he needed a catcher really bad. He also said that there is always a possibility that he may lose a player or two due to the Major Leagues and that he would have his assistants keep an eye on Christopher during the Fall. All in all, it was just a pleasure to meet the legendary coach and talk a little baseball.

I saw Pat Biglane last night at the MSU Alumni Banquet, we got to talking about the Trivia question. He's still not sure and he had a copy of the article from the Concordia Sentinel and it said that the score was 24-0 in favor of Vidalia. We're still trying to figure out where the 2 pts. came from? Did Joey just make this up to humiliate Pat? lol.....anyway, I saw Chuck Corder from the Natchez Democrat a little later at the banquet and I asked him to look it up for me. Maybe we'll have an answer pretty soon!

Congratulations to the Natchez 9 yr. olds on winning the Governor's Cup held in Vicksburg and to the Natchez 11 yr. old team for finishing in 2nd place. This is always a great tournament with alot of really good teams competing. Not just any run of the mill team can win this tournament or even place high without some really good talent!

The Sports Buzz will have it's Kick-Off Show starting next Wednesday, the 13th. Jerry & I are excited about the upcoming Football & Softball seasons. We will only be covering the schools in the CableOne viewing area which include: ACCS, Cathedral, Natchez High, Trinity and Vidalia. We will probably run though some scores of interest, but we'll only have video footage of local teams. We believe that by doing it this way, we can show more footage of the local teams. We hope that Huntington & Ferriday don't get mad but, they are on a different cable system. So tune in next week as we'll have run-down on the teams and some interviews with coaches and players.

I don't have alot to talk about this morning but, I do have a few things, so here goes:

The Barr & Jerry Sports Review starts this weekend on 107.1 FM "The River" at 9am -11am. Tune in and find out what's going on around the Miss-Lou area, maybe even a few predictions?

Jarrett Hoffpauir played for the Danbury Westerners of the New England Baseball Collegiate League, Their Commissioner is Fay
Vincent, former Commissioner of Major League Baseball. Jarrett led the team in batting average (.333), runs scored (50), doubles (9), total bases (77), plate appearances (174), at bats (153), games played (39). He was second on the team in slugging (.503), RBI's (25), homeruns (6), stolen bases (5). In the league, he was 7th in batting avg., 4th in hits, 6th in homeruns, 3rd in total bases. Jarrett will be a junior this coming year at USM, where he has excelled in his baseball career. We wish him the best of luck!

Christopher Rayborn has received an invitation for an official baseball visit to the University of Alabama. He will make the visit on September 13th, when Alabama will be playing a football game against Kentucky, that he will get to attend.

The Natchez 13's All-Stars can't hang their heads after playing 2 games in the Dixie Boys World Series, they played 2 games and lost by 1 run in each. They lost game 1 to Tennessee 2-1 and had several chances to take the lead. They lost game 2 to Florida 6-5 and had chances to win this one also. But all in all, it is a once in a lifetime opportunity just to get the chance to play in the Tournament and this team represented Natchez and the State proudly! The conditions of the playing fields was horrible as the rain made the fields wet and soggy. But everybody played under the same conditions. Hats off to the coaches, fans and players that made my experience the last few weeks an enjoyable experience.

I went out to Duncan Park G.C. yesterday morning and caught the first 9 holes of the Junior City Golf Championship. Jordan should have birdied #7 after he left his 2nd shot in the bunker after his drive ended up there from the tee box. He left a ball on the lip at #8, dead center of the hole! Lee Jones who won this tournament last year is 8 shots back after a first day score of 75. Mary Kate Byrne is leading the girls division after shooting a 96, oh yeah, she's the only girl there but, I could tell by watching her play that, she's going to be a good one! She swings the club very smoothly and has good tempo, when she learns to keep her upper body more "still", she'll lower those scores. Ulric Minor leads the 12-14 boys, they played 9 holes and he shot a 38. In the 11 & under boys, Lance Havard is leading with a 41 after 7 holes played. Final round play is today.

I was reading Chuck Corder's (The Democrat) article this morning about the World Series of Poker, and like him, I have been watching this also. I enjoy watching these "Big Guns" play and with the tiny cameras that they have sitting under each players hand makes it even more fun as you know what each player has, unlike past Poker Tournaments. High-Tech has even sprung up in High Stakes Poker now! What makes this even more excitable is the fact that anybody from any walk of life can play in this tournament, all it takes is money!

The Natchez 13 year old All-Stars will kick off Saturday at 2pm against host Tennessee. The game (and all games) will be carried by 107.1 FM "The River", I'll be driving up this morning with Mike Smith (The River owner") and we're both looking forward to spending another week watching these young men play ball.

Like I said earlier, I'm not sure if I'll have Internet access up there or not, but check the Bulletin Board while I'm gone for any and all updates on the games being played up there and also anything else surrounding the Miss-Lou. The Board is starting to get a little heated up here lately, so go on inside and take a peek around.

Vidalia football moves up to #2 in the Louisiana Prep Polls!

The MLB play-offs start tonight and I've got a dang spirit party at my house around 8pm! I dread the week of homecoming when you have a teen-ager in the house, I can't help but guard my house from the onslaught of kids trying to mess up your yard with toilet paper! My wife just planted all kind of stuff in the yard, and if it gets messed up, they'll be heads rolling instead!

It will be interesting to see, what kind of changes will be made at Ole Miss (who has the worst defense in the NCAA) and at Miss. State (who is the worst team in the SEC...maybe more!) but change is definitely needed and if the in-state schools want to continue to get the best athletes here in Mississippi, they better make the changes quickly! It's embarrassing.

I went to the Natchez High/Picayune game last Friday night, and as I've said, they are getting better, they're just shooting themselves in the foot at pivotal times during the game.  As the middle school and JV teams learn how to play football for the first time in their lives, it's just a matter of time before the results can be seen on the varsity level. Believe me, there are kids walking the sidewalks at Natchez High that contribute hugely (no pun intended, but true) to the success of Bulldog football.

Christopher pitched last Thursday night at the University of Alabama as MCC played Bevell State C.C. in one game, that was 18 innings long. No, it wasn't extra innings, the coaches just decided to play it that way. MCC won 17-16. Christopher pitched 2 innings and struck out 3, gave up one hit, a chopper that bounced over the 1st baseman's head. He was 89-90 mph and hit 91 mph a few times. They'll play next Monday at Birmingham Southern University but, Christopher will only pitch one inning in that game as their next and final fall game will be held at Miss. State and it's a Showcase Tournament and he'll throw 4 innings at that time.

Sorry about the trivia not getting posted until today, but Joey said it didn't matter, because nobody could answer them all anyway.

The 2003 Beau Pre' Cup was held this past weekend and Team Carnoustie defeated Team St. Andrews 14 to 10.

The Trinity/Pine Hills game may be cancelled due to lack of players by Pine Hills. More than likely, the game will not be played. In a way, I'll be glad to see that this game will not be played as I believe that Pine Hills would suffer more injuries and could possibly shut down their team for the rest of the season.

USM lost to Nebraska last night 38-14. I was surprised at the score as I thought Nebraska would beat them by at least 40 pts. The Carter kid looked good at QB last night, they should have started him alot sooner!

I'll be at the Natchez High/Picayune game tonight to watch the Bulldogs pull off the upset of the year! This is a good chance for alot of local football fans to come out and watch Natchez play tonight as it's the only game in town.

It's never too late to join in on the Pick'em contest, John L. Sullivan does a great job of keeping up with this and it's always more fun with more people...c'mon join on in!

Friday Night Football Round-Up

ACCS at Hillcrest - The rebels have a few players banged up, most of all, Luke Ogden, who's sporting a deep thigh bruise among his other injuries that he's been playing with since day 1. While I was at their practice yesterday, Dustin Case showed up a little late as he had just came from the Chiropractor. Cole Bradford suffered a concussion last Friday night but, he'll be able to go this week. "Hillcrest has a good ball-club", coach Walters said. "We'll need to contain them and hold onto the ball most of the night to have a chance." Hillcrest came from 2 TD's down last week against Central Hinds late in the game to win by 1 point. The Rebels have a good chance at winning this game.

Cathedral at Mize - Air Beesley has been successful this year but, Friday night's game will be the real test as Mize is a little better than the competition that the Green Wave has been facing lately. Coach Bessley said, "Mize has a really good football team and a running back that can out right fly!, we'll have to read their offensive scheme and make the necessary changes to keep them bottled up, we haven't seen any films where the other teams tried to throw on them too much, so we don't know alot about their secondary." Cathedral beat Mize last year and while Mize lost alot of their players to graduation, coach Beesley isn't taking that too lightly.

Natchez High hosting Picayune - The Natchez High Bulldogs have proven this year that they can be competitive. Coach Denson said, "They have a solid football team, I wouldn't compare them to South Pike as South Pike has the full package but, they're good and our guys know they're getting better. I've worked harder this year than I have ever before and it's showing in the attitude of these kids this year."

Trinity hosting Pine Hills - The biggest key in this ballgame is, try not to injure any of Pine Hills players, they're young, as in 8th graders playing. This is a game where the Saints second team will see alot of action and gain some game experience for next year. Pine Hills has struggled just to have enough players to even field a team. Coach David King will do his best to keep from causing any injuries especially after last years game at Pine Hills.

Vidalia at Rayville - This is suppose to be the big test for the Vikings, so you'd hear from any of the coaching staff from Vidalia but, they say that about every game. Vidalia put this game away in rare fashion last year and with most all of the returnees back this year, I wouldn't expect to see anything different in the outcome this year either.

I'll be headed out to Beau Pre' C.C. this evening to finish shooting the video for the gold course. Then I'll get into the 2pm game today, it's usually at 3pm but, everybody wants to finish early so they can get home and watch the USM/Nebraska game which starts at 6:30pm on ESPN.

Jerry and I filmed our part of the Sports Buzz yesterday and we filmed the first segment without the camera on! So when you see us reading from the paper, it was because Jerry was in a hurry to get back to work! Still, there is some great coverage from all the local games last Friday night.

Two of the Trivia questions are answered but, the one that gets you a t-shirt is still unanswered.

Schedules for today may be set for another day as the rain will probably wash away any events. I believe more rain is in store for today as well.

As I worked the phone from Meridian last Friday night, there seemed to be quite a few squeakers in local football action. AC had a close one at WCCA but pulled out the win, Natchez High only lost by 2 TD's to Warren Central and Trinity beat Oak Forest in double-overtime. Cathedral and Vidalia won easily.

As I pulled into Meridian C.C. on Friday evening, they were taking batting practice, some of the guys had gotten bigger from last year and you could tell it by the sound of their bats. They played an inner-squad game and one of the freshman pitchers threw a fastball to Van Pope, this shot never had an arch to it as it landed well beyond the centerfield fence. One of the coaches said, "Welcome to college baseball!" I went up there for their Fall game at Demopolis, AL on Saturday. I thought it was just 3 teams that were playing a Round Robin Tournament. As I entered the 4 field complex, they were selling T-shirts (and ya'll know how I like them t-shirts!) One the front, it had all the teams that were there......18 of them! The Tournament was put on by West Alabama University, it started Friday and ended Sunday, every team got to play 2 games. MCC played Chattahoochee Valley C.C. first and Christopher pitched the first 2 innings. He was consistently 88-89 mph and had better movement on his fast-ball than last year, his change-up was better, he changed the way he throws his curve ball and it breaks later than it used to, which is better. He pitched OK but, he did leave more pitches "Up" in the zone than he usually does but, he's only been throwing for 10 days. He told me after the game that the mound had a soft spot on his landing and he couldn't get used to it. The scout from the San Diego Padres that drafted Christopher last year was there and he did nothing but praise him on his performance. Maybe I'm just to critical because he's my son and I knew it wasn't his best effort, no matter what time of year it was! I also met one of the asst. baseball coaches at Ole Miss, Coach Lake. He is the hitting coach there and a really nice guy. I have no idea how many scouts were there from either college's or the Major Leagues but, it was a bunch of them! MCC lost their 2nd game to Jeff Davis C.C. as most of the freshman got to pitch and bat in that contest and still only lost by one run. btw.. we won the first game by about 3 runs. MCC will never be the underdog in any game this year and I look for them to come out in the Top 3 when the JUCO Polls come out next year.

I had alot of guesses on the Trivia but, only one of them was answered correctly, keep on trying!

ACCS leads the District 2-AAA South Polls and Trinity leads the Region 7-A Polls, ASC is 2nd, WCCA 3rd, Huntington 4th, Pine Hills 5th and Tensas 6th.

Chris Blackwell, Franklin County: Had field goals of 45 & 47 yds. in a 22-19 loss to Loyd Star.

Chase Brown, Trinity: Ran for 2 TD's and scored twice on interception returns in a 58-0 win over Huntington.

Luke Ogden, ACCS: Carried 16 times for 256 yds. and 3 TD's in a 43-13 win over Copiah.

After much discussion last night and a few phone calls, Christopher Rayborn has committed to Ole Miss for his junior year of baseball. I talked with head coach Mike Bianco and asst. coach Dan McDonnell last night and got all the figures straight first and then I talked with Christopher and he decided that it would be the best fit for him. Alabama was scheduled to visit him at Meridian on Wednesday and see him pitch during practice but, he would rather be where he knows more of the players and remain in the State. He cannot officially sign until the early signing period in November. Christopher's teammate, Van Pope also committed to the Rebels.

I grew up as an Ole Miss fan as "Archie Who" entrapped me as it did many in the State but, as the years went by, I found myself following Pro football more than college and never really stood by any particular college team. I still like to pull for Ole Miss, as well as all the other State schools, and I even pull for LSU when they play. I just don't favor one over the other, but since I will be sending one of my own to Ole Miss, I guess they'll have to get the nod in face to face match-ups from now on! But I still like them all!

The Gulf States PGA Senior Pro-Am is being held today out at Beau Pre' C.C., tee off starts at noon.

Last Friday night was a good one for the Miss-Lou as all of the 5 local teams won their football games. But the surprise of all was the 14-12 shocker of Natchez High over Top 20 ranked Vicksburg. Has the sleeping giant wakened? We'll see as the Bulldogs take on Warren Central next Friday night.

I got to play golf both Saturday and Sunday this weekend out at Beau Pre' C.C., the course was just a little damp on Saturday, but by Sunday, we were back to the 90 degree rule with the carts back on the fairways. These means a lot if you hate walking like I do!

Christopher called me Sunday evening and let me know that Ole Miss made him a great offer to play baseball their next year. He had a great visit and he even hollered at Hayden Wadsworth from the sidelines of the football game on Saturday during warm-ups. Hayden couldn't come over and talk to him but, he did get a wave and a smile out of him. Alabama will come to watch Christopher throw a bullpen on Wednesday and to probably make him another offer. I don't think they can come close to what Ole Miss has offered but, you never know since Van Pope committed this weekend to Ole Miss this weekend after he had a great offer from Alabama as well. I should know more by Wednesday night.

Well, another week with 4 teams playing at home, Vidalia is the only team on the road this week. So I'll be trying my best to get around to all of them again this week. I'll make my rounds and end up at ACCS since they are in a pivotal game with Copiah to determine if they will make the playoffs.

I played gold yesterday evening out at Beau Pre' C.C. and the course just seems to be getting better and better every time I play there. The maintenance crew does an excellent job at keeping this course is such beautiful condition. I'll probably play again this Saturday out there, grab your clubs and meet me out there at 1pm. There's always a game!

Joey Martin stumps everybody 2 out of 3 this week but, the main trivia has been answered the last two weeks by blondes! Does that mean that blonde females and Joey think alike? lol

ACCS host Copiah Academy - This will be the 2nd conference game for the Rebels and a win here should give them a berth in the playoffs in the MPSA 3A Div. II South District. Copiah's best back has a torn MCL and is doubtful for Friday night's game. I look for Copiah to set back and throw the football. I figure Luke Ogden will get his mandatory carries for the night and Copiah will have a tough job getting him down!

Cathedral host Dexter - First conference game for the Green Wave and they'll face a usually tough Dexter squad but, I said usually because they lost a lot of starters from last years team and should be in the re-building phase. Cathedral will air it out again this week as well and Dexter won't know what hit'em!

Natchez High host Vicksburg - Vicksburg was pre-season ranked #4 in the State, they've lost their first 2 games and had a lot of trouble holding onto the ball. Natchez High keeps making the fundamental mistakes. The Bulldogs are working hard but, it won't get any easier for them on Friday night.

Trinity host Huntington - First conference game for the Saints as they've racked up the points so far this year to a tune of 161 of them! They've given up zero! Expect more of the same on Friday night as a struggling Hounds team rolls into town.

Vidalia at Newellton  - Any good team will have a sub-par game during the year, last Friday night was Vidalia's, I feel sorry for Newellton as they face a Vikings team that is out to show everybody that they are for real!

As I typed in the date of 9/11/03 this morning, it brought back memories of the tragedy that struck our nation. Take a moment of silent time today to pray for the families of those that perished on this day, 2 years ago.

This weeks Sports Buzz will have all 5 local teams playing complete games for the first time this year, we'll have the highlights from each game. Remember that each school provides me with a game film, so some of the games quality will be better than others. Sometimes a coach gives me a copy from the original and sometimes it's a copy of a copy, and that makes a lot of difference. Anyway, you'll see some great highlights from last Friday's games.

I got a call last night from asst. baseball coach Dan McDonnell of Ole Miss, he does most of the recruiting there. He just called to let me know about this upcoming weekend trip that he has planned for Christopher. They'll put him up Friday and Saturday night and they'll make him an offer before he leaves. Coach McDonnell told me to give them a call either Sunday night or Monday to discuss the scholarship offer. I thought it was very classy of him to call me and let me in on their plans for him. Christopher went to Alabama last weekend and I never even heard from the coaches there. So I was a little surprised when I got the call last night. He has filled out questionnaires for Mississippi State, LSU, South Carolina and Clemson also but, we haven't heard anything from those schools yet.

Not much of any sports related stuff happening today so, tomorrow I'll give a run-down of the upcoming games for Friday night and any implications that they carry.

Clarion Ledger Top Performers for the week of Sept. 1-7

Dudley Guice, Trinity: Caught 5 passes for 126 yds. and 2 TD's in a 47-0 win over Claiborne.

Luke Ogden, ACCS: Carried 38 times for 381 yds. and 4 TD's in a 34-21 win over Central Private.

Turner Smith, Cathedral: Was 16 of 28 passing for 259 yds. and 3 TD's in a 35-7 win over Madison St. Joe.

Justin Thornton, formerly of ACCS, played football for one year a couple of years ago at Co-Lin C.C. in Wesson. He got a call the other day and was offered a full scholarship to play one more season for the Wolves. Congratulations!

Last Friday night, I traveled around so much that I missed seeing much of any of the games that I attended, trying to get footage for the Sports Buzz while 4 teams were playing at home was just too much as much as I like to watch football. Cathedral's game with St. Joe was my last game of the night and I got to see the 2nd half of that game but, it was pretty much over when I got there as Cathedral was already in the comfort zone and playing on cruise control. I'll have highlights from all the games though this week on the show.

Did You Know? Luke Ogden, after just 3 games in only around 350 yds. from having rushed for 1,000 yds. on the year? I talked to asst. coach Rusty McPhate on Saturday and he told me that when they got back to the school on Friday night, that the phone was ringing in the coaches office and it was the Clarion Ledger, they asked, "how did ya'll do? and How did Ogden do?" A win for ACCS this coming Friday night against Copiah Academy would all but give ACCS a spot in the playoffs.

Cathedral played their first non-conference game of the year, and it's their last! The next 9 games are all conference games! What a district huh? They'll play Dexter this Friday night in a tough contest at home.

Trinity continues their execution of teams as they rolled out another mashing of their opponent. It probably won't be any different this Friday night as the Huntington Hounds roll into town.

Natchez High got caught in the buzz saw on Friday night by South Pike and now they're headed to the chipping machine as they host Vicksburg this Friday night in a non-conference game. Vicksburg was pre-season ranked #4 in the State. Natchez High will have their hands full just trying to keep the scoring down in this contest.

Vidalia escaped a Block lead late in the 4th quarter to get the win. I feel sorry for Newellton as Vidalia looks for revenge on their next opponent! This game's played away but, that won't matter as Vidalia is looking to pound the next team they play!
